Iowa Southern Utilities won 25 year franchise renewals in two towns. Pleasant Plain voted 67 to 0 and Richland 242 to 6 in favor. ISU representative Tom Gray was assisted by local man Lero Sheetz.
Des Moines reports the mid century state fair heads into its final two days with momentum as attendance after Monday to Wednesday outpaced the previous year. Total so far reaches 368,339, within 4,000 of last year’s mark, with yesterday at 55,542 and receipts already begun as profits loom for tomorrow. The schedule features a middleweight tug contest sheep shearings livestock judging and a school quiz derby.
Marvin Carter, Benteco store manager, tops his district in cookie sales and wins first prize in a manager contest an all expenses paid trip to St. Louis on September 10 to see the Pirates play the Cardinals.

Bonn report says Soviet and East German leaders agreed on a secret peace treaty draft. The pact would require withdrawal of Soviet troops from the Soviet zone within six months and the creation of a 25000 man East German armed force.
A county wide cracker box derby will be held in Wellman on Labor Day September 4. Boys interested in entering should contact Fred Sloggett in Wellman. Formerly a Washington soap box derby inspired local interest in the Wellman event.
A powerful hurricane cut across 200 miles of gulf coastline from Pensacola to Panama City dumping 6.44 inches of rain in 24 hours. Winds reached 65 mph locally with eight foot tides tearing boats from moorings and cutting electricity in Pensacola, Panama City, Fort Walton, and nearby towns. no casualties reported and damage expected to be minor.
Leominster Massachusetts Mrs Susie L Kingston aged 95 lives alone in a trailer and prefers living independently day by day according to a UP report.
About 20,000 Deere & Co workers in Illinois and Iowa planned a midnight strike, expanding a farm equipment walkout that already idled 70,000 in the sector. The UAW ordered closing of Deere plants in East Moline Des Moines Dubuque Ottumwa and Waterloo Iowa amid earlier United Auto Workers and CIO actions at International Harvester plants.
