Senate backed a doctor draft to 55 age limit positions with a 21 month term. House Armed Services Chair Earl Vinson predicted easy approval as differences between House and Senate versions loom. Drafted doctors and dentists would lose the $100 volunteer bonus unless serving as reservists while Senate’s plan ties the same bonus to volunteers.
The Chinese communists threaten war as UN forces push into Korea. Moscow and Peiping weigh whether to intervene as 270,000 Chinese troops near the Korean border await a signal to jump in. A U S Seventh Fleet stands ready to defend Formosa if invasion begins.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson voiced concern over reports of Chinese communist troops moving toward North Korea and urged China to respect United Nations security council orders. He said the United States would avoid aggression and pressed North Korea to lay down arms, noting a possible UN cease fire.

John J. McKeone 86 died at his son's home 618 West Main after months of care. Funeral at St James Catholic church Friday at 9 am with burial in Ela Grove cemetery. Rosary at Sherman’s funeral home Thursday at 8 pm. Survived by daughter Madeline Suitor of Potlatch Idaho son Bernard and Leonard of Washington seven grandchildren sister Jeannette Furlong of Pasadena and one deceased son Louis.
School Superintendent M. M. Schell reported first day counts show 1 090 registrations this year against 1 059 last year. Junior high enrollments rose to 173 from 139 and high school to 396, with final totals expected above 400. Lincoln has 257 pupils and Stewart 231. junior college registers 33, a drop of seven.
Jerry Van Dyke age 71 of Fredonia died this morning at the Louisa County home where he had lived for several years. Born in Fredonia in October 1878 he was a son of Webster and Sancy Marvin Van Dyke. He is survived by two sisters Mrs Fora Kulp Muscatine and Mrs Jarice Manley Fairfield. He served as mayor of Iredonia for a two year term. The body is at Stephens funeral home with funeral date pending.
Chamber secretary Lester Hamill announced Washington shop hours for September through December. Grocery stores will close at 6 p.m. daily and 10 p.m. Saturdays, while other stores close at 5 30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. Saturdays.
DES MOINES The State Safety department reported 29 persons injured in 87 traffic accidents in the 24 hours ending at 5 p.m. yesterday. The total injured in 820 accidents since the two week Drive Right campaign began Aug. 22 reached 323. No deaths were reported yesterday leaving the fatality toll at 14. Compared with eight day totals in 1948 the figures show fewer fatalities but higher injuries overall.

State Conservation Commission sets dates for squirrels and rabbits across the state. Squirrels Gray and Fox run Sept 15 to Nov 15, 1950 with a 6 per day bag limit and 12 in possession. rabbits Cottontail and Jack run Sept 15, 1950 to Jan 31, 1961 with a 6 per day bag limit and 12 in possession. Shooting hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
American and South Korean forces drove Communist units from a ridge blocking the Pohang Taegu highway near Pohang and its air field. MacArthur reported the road cleared except for isolated sniper fire, as stalemated fighting continued near Sianyong and Masan with U.S. Ninth and Eighth divisions involved in defense and patrol actions.
Washington reports another costly price support program for potatoes is likely this fall and winter despite only half of this year’s crop secured.
