Iowa column notes new infantile paralysis cases in Waterloo

In Waterloo area the outbreak grows with two new infantile paralysis cases raising total local cases to 29. The victims are Jacqueline Ackerman, 11, and Patsy Rust, with families named Ackerman and Rust corroborating the report. Des Moines notes David O Milligan, 39, ex president of Western Mutual Fire Insurance Co, indicted for embezzlement by Polk County grand jury. Charges show more than $20,000 in funds, with witnesses citing a larger shortage between $50,000 and $60,000.

Lundeen and Suechting Reported Infantile Paralysis Cases

Ottumwa reports new cases of infantile paralysis involving 13 year old Richard Lundeen son of Rev. Malvin H. Lundeen and Frances Suechting daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H Suechting. Both are listed as satisfactory. County physician Dr Donald McElderry estimates 15 cases in Wapello county.

Des Moines Proposal Aims at Youth Farm Training Project

A national youth administration project to train 200 Iowa men in modern farming skills is proposed for Des Moines. State administrator Theodore P. Eslick said plans are not definite yet. Iowa State College at Ames would co sponsor with the city, making it the first of its kind in the United States.

Seized Trucker in Des Moines Driving Puzzle

Carl Andrew Anderson 31 of Harlan released on 600 bond after police chased a zigzagging semitrailer at high speed. The double decker truck carried 100 hogs headed to market, creating a puzzle for officers who could not drive the truck or care for the animals.

Moviegoers Favor Double Feature Shows

Theater patrons here voted for double feature programs in three theaters. The total returns show 57.1 percent for double features against 42.9 percent for single bills, Tri-Blates theaters reported. This nearly matches the Gallup poll showing 57 percent for single features and 43 percent for two-picture programs.

Urges Residents to Oppose Parking Meters

Sioux City grocer and Chamber of Commerce president Charles Baten urges residents to resist the council proposal to resume operation of 600 parking meters. The meters have been idle after the Iowa Supreme Court ruled the system illegal. The council is amending the ordinance to conform with the court decision.

Lutheran delegates seek recall of Roosevelt Vatican envoy

Delegates at the Iowa district convention of the American Lutheran church passed a resolution demanding the recall of Myron Taylor, President Roosevelt's personal representative to the Vatican. The measure also urged the president to avoid honoring the head of the Roman Catholic Church as both temporal ruler and spiritual leader of Christendom in the future.

Two Local Men Sentenced After West Chester Disturbance

Justice of the Peace J B Bovee presided this morning over a West Chester disturbance case. Marion Rit tenhouse pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace and was fined five dollars plus costs. Richard McDole pleaded guilty to intoxication and resisting an officer and received 15 days in jail for intoxication and 30 days for resisting the West Chester officer.
