A Des Moines column notes war policy and London air defense. It reports injuries from a baseball accident that led to death of Robert Knopp, 19, and a show incident where Milton Cramer, 60, cut his eye after slipping on grandstand steps during a fair's golden wedding celebration.
Sherman W. Needham editor and publisher of the Ames Milepost won the 1940 Iowa American Legion editorial contest. He received the Frank Miles plaque at the Legion convention in Arnolds Park. His winning editorial titled The American Legion appeared in the June 27 issue of the Milepost.
Frank E. Sheldon 72 of Mount Ayr vice president of the Iowa State fair board was treated at Iowa Methodist hospital for a broken arm after slipping on a rug and falling as he left his room in the administration building. He has been a fair board member for 11 years.
Davenport police report Henry Lenz, a 65 year old man known to carry large sums in a tobacco sack, found slain in a one room shack on Davenport's west edge. Police Chief Reed Phillips suspects robbery as the motive after a fatal attack last Saturday.
John Clark Fetzer, Chicago insurance specialist, and Erwin Strom, assistant to the executive views president of the Industrial Training Institute of Chicago, join Grinnell College administrative staff. Fetzer becomes president Stevens's assistant and heads the development committee. Strom serves as assistant to the college treasurer and leads student finance.
W C Davison of Clarinda won first in the state fair middleweight team pulling with six horses totaling 3140 pounds. His Belgian team nosed out the Earl Fritz team from Fontanelle on a wet dynamometer track at 3200 pounds, pulling 20 feet 10 inches. The Frug team also pulled the same weight but inch less.
Rev. F. E. Meuser of Columbus Ohio told the Iowa convention of the American Lutheran church that 35 percent of America's under privileged are outside the church because no provision is made for them. He, executive secretary of the home mission board, urged more energetic mission work.
London reports three air raids by German planes, with 500 to 600 fighters involved in attempts to reach the London area. Spitfires and Hurricanes fought them off in morning and two afternoon assaults, leaving only a few raiders to reach the outskirts.
The Washington county 4-H girls demonstration team from Jacksonte club Mary Elien Duensing and Dorothy Daniel earned a reserve championship at the state fair demonstration team contest judged yesterday afternoon. Nine champions and three reserve champions were named per division across clothing home furnishings home efficiency and nutrition. Their act titled Hosiery From the Store to Your Dresser Drawer or The Care and Selection of Hosiery earned them a trip to the state 4-H convention at Ames next June.
The Washington union religious series ends next Sunday in Central park with six churches joining in the final gathering. It is the tenth service of the summer with large audiences, Rev Claude Breidenthal of the Church of Christ delivering the message "Lest We Forget" at 7 39. A brass quartet from the Municipal band led the music including Charles Mayo Daryl Fetters David Masson and Milo Sorden.
Public school staff in Washington will gather at Lincoln school at noon Saturday for a luncheon. Afterward principals will lead meetings with their faculty groups, announced today by Supt. K. A. Ralston.
Dean Harland Mead reports 45 students registered yesterday at Washington junior college, with a brisk start to enrollment this year. He will be at the high school building Saturday forenoon to assist students unable to register today.
Ames, Iowa bids due September 10 for 65 road projects including 30.7 miles of maintenance resurfacing in Washington County. The announcement notes funding and scope for county and state transportation work.
Reverend I Fredmund resigns as pastor of the local Baptist church to preach his last sermon on Sunday September Sth and begin duties as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Churdan Iowa the following Sunday. He and Mrs Fredmund have overseen church growth with 100 new members including 59 baptisms and multiple new departments. He has served as president of the local Ministerial association and held roles in county and state associations while conducting 35 funerals and 22 weddings.
Dean Harland Mead of the junior college announced a special appeal for young men with two years of college to enroll in a Washington bound pilot training course. Eligible applicants include those with two or four years of college, aged 18 to 26 in good physical condition. Airport project work continues under a Chamber of Commerce committee as negotiations for a field move forward.
Sharon Kay Conn of Des Moines won the state fair baby health contest with a 99.40 score the highest in the event’s 30 year history. Donald Merrill Parker of West Des Moines took the boys division with 99.24, the second highest ever. Floyd Cooper set the record in 1932.
In Vienna today a four power conference signed an agreement allowing Romania to cede about 21 250 square miles of Transylvania to Hungary under a German Italian plan for stabilizing the Balkans. In Bucharest the government bowed to axis terms, accepting the transfer amid German pressure. Moscow reports Russian fleet maneuvers in the Black Sea and calls for prompt replies to protests over Romanian army provocations.
Members of the Mississippi Valley Farm Business association will tour the Richard Stephens hog operation one mile west and 1% miles north of Crawfordsville next Tuesday September 8. Stephens advances humane hog raising with about 500 head on minimal equipment. Herb Howell will lead the event focusing on swine beef cattle machinery use and future outlook. The tour is open to the public and invited to participate.
Des Moines August 30 1940 grand champion baby beef weighing 791 pounds sold for 435.05 dollars to Morrell Packing Co Ottumwa. The animal brought 65 cents a pound. Reserve champion owned by Dixie Shawver Knoxville also sold for 214.65 dollars.
Postmaster M C DeLong announced the office will follow its holiday schedule next Monday Labor Day. There will be no city or rural deliveries all day, and the stamp window will open 8 to 10 am for stamps.
In accordance with the general plans for observing next Monday Labor Day as a holiday it was decided today that the Journal would be issued at noon that day.
The fifth consecutive summer instrumental program closes at Washington High School with 100 students enrolled. A lawn concert on September 3 at 7:30 p.m. features the summer band, and classes in all band and orchestral instruments will continue next year. Contact Maurice Brayton to join.
Plans disclosed for a nine oclock Tuesday morning patriotic program at the high school to launch the new school year. Dr Stanley B Niles of Iowa Wesleyan college will speak with high school bands providing music on the east lawn if the weather allows.
Fair weather drew a large crowd to the Iowa State Fair on its final day. By eleven o clock the attendance reached 245,605, far above last year’s 17,940 at the same hour, as rains held down.
Work on South Second Avenue between East Washington and Mast Madison proceeds with grading by William Horrabin Contracting Company. Dirt from the site is moved to a nearby lot to fill a weed patch, gas mains are being installed, trees are trimmed, and pole lines adjusted for the paving operation.
