President Roosevelt announced he would sign neutrality legislation and other measures from the last congressional session before leaving for Hyde Park. He signed the Guffey coal stabilization and federal alcohol control bills and the 250 million tax on the rich bill, with about 40 measures still pending.
Davenport officials say about 155 railroad men in the tri cities may qualify for pensions under the railroad pension bill signed by President Roosevelt. The Davenport figure is 70 workers with the remainder in Rock Island and Moline, Ill.
Arthur J. Bender 30 a dance musician confessed to police the theft of two saxophones valued at 350 dollars from fellow orchestra members. He was brought back from Elvira Ohio where officers said he had shipped the instruments to himself.
Jacob Kilburn, 12, was hospitalized after losing part of the index finger on his right hand while playing with a lawn mower at the home of Chester Douglas near Stockport. Will Jeffrey, 11, suffered the loss of the second finger on his right hand while playing with a cream separator in Fairfield.
In Marshalltown a falling limb crushed the car roof as Mrs. Russell Peterson driving on route 1 was struck and trapped in her seat. A passenger also injured in the freak accident, both taken to a local hospital for treatment.
A spark from an electric drill ignited gasoline in a car tank at Motor Service garage in Oelwein causing $3,500 damage. Owner Palmer Hilsabeck suffered minor burns. two employees were unhurt. Three cars burned and the rear end of the shop destroyed. Firemen fought the flames for about an hour.
Rural sewing machine sales by the Singer Sewing Machine Co. increased 40 percent in the last two months, said F. W. Ballard of St. Louis, general midwestern sales manager. He spoke as the principal speaker at a meeting of 60 Iowa and Missouri agents.
Des Moines district court records show 74 marriage licenses issued in Aug 21 30 period up from 63 during 1934 state fair. Total August licenses reach 149 with 12 more expected to match 1934 totals.

J. W. Calvert former Milwaukee railway station agent in Washington died of a heart attack in Ottumwa after a period of poor health He was about 75 and had served in Washington Mystic Iowa and Ottumwa His funeral is set for Tuesday at Ottumwa with attendees expected from Washington He was active in Republican politics and a Mason Knight of Pythias and Ik of a fraternal group Surviving are his widow and several children.
A family that had spent roughly a year on leave from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has now departed the city. The group reportedly traveled during a period of extended stay away from home to visit the Emperor Selassie.
Iowa Daily Press notes James O Malley turning 100 on August 28 1835 born in Westport Ireland. He emigrated 1863 1864 to America and Iowa respectively. His father John arrived same year and died at Perry June 15 1887 nearly 113. James plans a large birthday celebration as he jokes the first 100 years are the hardest.

Survived by daughter Mrs John Barry of Muscatine and son Lucius Harrison of New York. sister Mrs Allie Brown of Los Angeles.
Iowa liquor authorities and Des Moines police investigate 5000 seals similar to state store seals. Seizure in a Des Moines home led to two arrests and recall of Cooper’s former seal donations, raising doubts of authenticity.
In Poplar Bluff Missouri CLP report centerfielder F. Hillis chased a fly into a wasp colony. A sting sent by a wasp forced him to dance out of his clothing while teammates formed a protective circle. He did not catch the fly.
Mrs. Floyd Guthrie of Washington identified an unidentified man killed by a train in Ottumwa as her cousin James Noble of Des Moines. Noble rode a freight train, likely fell off and was run over. he was believed en route to Washington. The Guthries had recently visited Des Moines, and Noble was due in Washington yesterday or today.
Jose Ibarra former president of Ecuador was arrested and forced to resign in favor of Antonio Pons former premier who was named provisional president pending a special election in October.
New term opens Sept 9 with Judge Bechly presiding. District court reports 74 new cases across divisions including 21 foreclosures and 27 law actions. Divorces total six with six named pairs listed among the proceedings.
Washington public schools plan a Monday start with forenoon classes on Labor Day and no afternoon sessions. College enrollment rises to about 80, with 60 already registered including 20 sophomores and 40 freshmen. High School enrollment sits at 439 with seniors 113, juniors 86, sophomores 124, freshmen 116, new entrants from several towns. Junior High reports 227 enrolled with 63 sixth grade, 74 seventh, 90 eighth. average overall around 260 students.
Two boys escaped from the state children's home at Toledo and were in the area yesterday. Francis Hiller of Brighton and Everett Carlson of Storm Lake were located. Carlson agreed to return to the home, while Hiller remained missing. The youths had been committed to the home by the district court and had wandered along the Iowa River for weeks. Sheriff Putnam notified Toledo authorities as Carlson was taken into custody.
County offices at the court houses will be closed next Monday for Labor Day, announced today by the county auditor.

The British government urged Ethiopia to cancel oil concessions granted to American and British interests. Mussolini vowed Italy would not be deterred by such concessions as he spoke to tens of thousands in Trento. Washington said the United States would not be drawn into a foreign conflict over the grant and noted potential future claims once the Ethiopian crisis is settled.
