Vinton Iowa officials propose a 76000 dollar girls dormitory for the Iowa School for the Blind and apply for a 45 percent public works grant. The last legislative session appropriated 42000 dollars for improvements, with 70000 dollars in PWA funds used last year for boiler and water tank upgrades.

Burlington police report a three year old boy named Jimmy Williams from Cincinnati was found crying in a post office after their car caravan. officers kept him calm until his parents James and Mrs Williams arrived. The family had traveled across Iowa when they stopped at the post office and continued for 13 miles before realizing the child was not with them.
Muscatine area celebrates the birth of a week-old son to Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Jefferson near here. Grandmothers Mrs. John Jefferson and Mrs. Clarence Clark attend, with great grandmothers Mrs. H J Dollman and Mrs. Henry Ward, and the great great grandmother Mrs. Hester Clark also noted.
Dr. Thomas C. Poulter, first assistant on the Byrd Antarctic expedition, will open a fall and winter lecture series September 25 and plans a nationwide tour to recount the expedition. He will visit several cities to share experiences and findings from the voyage.

Bennie Howard of Chicago led the Bendix trophy field arriving in Cleveland after 2 046 miles in 8 hours 33 minutes from Los Angeles. Rumors said he may push on to New York to challenge Roscoe Turner’s cross country record. Several pilots including Turner and Amelia Earhart head toward Cleveland as the race begins amid tragedy as Cecil Allen dies in a crash near Gris.
Justice of the Peace James J. Westwood and constable Tim Drexler were jailed in Allegheny county as investigators seek links to the July 10 shooting death of Westwood's wife at her home.
In Madrid Missouri on August 30 Sheriff Sam Harris failed the final hangman test. A substitute executed Roy Hamilton and Eddie Daymond after Harris delegated to teachers who then had Epworth specialist Phil Hanna adjust the noose and signal the lever. The execution followed the 1933 murder of Arthur Cashion during a failed robbery at a filling station. The families of the slain men witnessed the hanging.
Dr F W Eastwood visiting near Granville Tl announces that services will resume at the Presbyterian church next Sunday after a month break. The note to the Journal says crops in the area are below Iowa but above last year. Local banking figure Walter Graves is now cashier at a nearby bank. Dr Eastwood began his ministry in that locality.
The body of Queen Astrid of Belgium, killed in a Swiss car crash with King Leopold driving, was brought to Brussels and laid in state at Laeken palace awaiting funeral services next Tuesday. Soldiers lined the route to the palace as mourners gathered, flags hung at half mast, and guns saluted the royal couple. King Leopold, wounded, left the funeral train and joined the coffin vigil.
Iowa continues to feel cool air with yesterday’s showers affecting much of the state. The high reached 68 degrees and the low dipped to 38, with officials saying no damaging frost is expected.
JoAnn Wilson daughter of Mr and Mrs Glenn Wilson of Washington won a prize in the baby health contest at the state fair but the exact award was not learned today. The Wilsons and JoAnn were called back to Des Moines when awards were to be announced. JoAnn will be 3 years old in November.

Supt BE A Ralston expects all teaching staff to attend a meeting at 2 30 tomorrow afternoon. Principals hold an advance conference at 9 tomorrow morning. Dorothy Kammueller will replace Irene DeLong Caviness at Wallace school and is a former Wayland teacher from Dubuque. Geneva Peck will replace Ella Kelley at Centennial school and comes from Preston, Iowa, after teaching at Renwick.
Scott Willey aged 30, farmer from Cotter north of Columbus Junction, died Thursday in Muscatine at his sister’s home while receiving treatment after a period of illness. He was born August 1905 to C. S. and wife, married Mildred Cook, survived by widow, two daughters Marian and Vera, parents, three sisters and a brother. Funeral service for Mrs Endsley held at United Presbyterian church in Columbus City with burial in Columbus City cemetery.
Miss Marian Miller, not related to H. G. Miller, handles Western Union duties during summers in towns like Osage, Charles City, Albia, and Ft. Dodge. She trained at Chillicothe Business College, previously taught school, and now works a three week stint after December to June in Vinton and other towns. Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Miller and Cyrus P. Galley visit Ft. Dodge during the vacation period.

Mrs. Omar Hentzel of Donnellson Iowa is hospitalized with mainly bruises after two cars collided on primary road 161 southeast of Riverside. The Hentzel vehicle driven by Omar Hentzel with his father in law as passenger and a second car driven by Amanda Glassbrenner of Racine Wisconsin were involved. The crash occurred when the fenders hooked as the Glassbrenner car crowded the center of the highway, sending both cars into the east ditch and causing heavy damage.
Alta Grecian will present a recital at the United Presbyterian church chapel at eight o'clock tonight aided by Daryl Fetters on baritone horn and Carolyn McCleery at the piano. Miss Hamilton sponsors the program and the public is invited to attend.
Des Moines forecasters urge caution as the fall squirrel season begins. The commission cites tree shooting and ground shooting toward companions and livestock as top causes of accidents. Hunters are advised to locate companions before shooting and to aim away from animals.
Charles Crone could not be found this morning when iodine was mentioned in his grocery. An itinerant saleslady used stain remover on Chick's shirt and Crone purchased the product. Later Albert Askea wore a white shirt as Crone allegedly spilled ink on his sleeve.
Emperor Haile Selassie urged Ethiopians to unite for national defense against Italian air powers tanks and bombs. He called families to offer their sons to the cause and reassured civilians that air raids cannot destroy the whole country, tanks cannot reach behind cities, and bombs kill only a few people.
President Roosevelt signed the Guffey coal bill and a new alcohol control bill in Washington. The liquor regulation shifts to the Treasury Department while the coal measure begins a broad government program of industrial regulation despite constitutional doubts.
