Washington High School football follows warm-up drills at 7 30 p m with player introductions around 8 p m and a controlled scrimmage in game conditions for fans. Admission is a bar of soap. If rain, clinic moves to Saturday night at the same time.
Workmen applied the first coat of blue paint and added WASHINGTON in black block letters to the completed water tower. Completion and final inspection are pending with a pressure metering device to be installed before filling, not anticipated to start until late next week.
Chicago report notes American Airlines and Trans World Airlines launched 100 percent screening of boarding passengers and baggage in all terminals to curb hijackings. American focus centers on 727s and larger aircrafts, per spokesman. George A. Warde, American president, ordered total screening for passenger protection.
In Iowa City the 18 year old voting age prompts a big push at the University of Iowa. Mobile registrars target students returning for fall classes to vote in Nevada elections. The Student Senate Legislative Action Committee funds the drive with 2500 dollars from student activities fees.
Sindlinger Poll finds Nixon at 55.1 percent and McGovern at 22.9 percent among likely voters. The 14 point rise reflects interviews with over 13,000 people, conducted by telephone since July 14, with about 1,200 interviews between August 22 and 24 during the Republican National Convention.
Gardner Cowl's Foundation of Des Moines grants Grinnell College one million dollars in recognition of its reputation. President David Kruidenier announced the gift, to be paid in installments over five years, aiming to ensure Grinnell maintains high standards in the future.
The original UPI rest stop opens Friday at a site six miles east of Clarion along U.S. 69 and Town 3. Originated in 1954 by former Wright County Sheriff Bob Blecker, now Belmond police chief, the facility marks this year's Labor Day rest stop operation.
Fairfield Democrat William Fullerton III withdrew from the 44th Senatorial District race after an attorney general ruled he was ineligible due to being under 25 at the January convening. The Washington County Historical Society will host Harstad Peter T. Stans, Nixon campaign finance director, agrees to be interviewed by House Banking and Currency Committee aides about the Watergate break in and alleged mismanagement of 350000 dollars in campaign funds. GAO cites 114000 linked to Barker Florida account and possible violations by the Committee to Re-elect the President. Grand jury signals indictments may come. White House says staff not involved and any violations will be corrected. Williams meets Hunt. Colson to meet with Williams.

The Iowa City Council authorized Urban Planning Director Jack Klaus to proceed with the 3.2 million R-18 Urban Renewal Plan for a 186 acre area southeast of the business district. It includes 25 lots owned by 19 people and calls for moderate income housing near downtown, plus widening Ralston Creek to a 40 foot channel with the city’s share about 980 thousand and the rest from federal funds.
Arvine Calif. UPI reports Rufus will replace Frasier at Lion Country Safari after the older lion’s death. The park bought Rufus from Wichita Kansas and plans a two week quarantine in a cage with the pride before potential breeding. If he fails to impress the lionesses he may be retired.
