Former Army Lt. Aldo Iacardi pleaded not guilty to eight perjury counts in Washington. He allegedly lied about helping murder Maj. William Holohan during a World War II OSS mission behind Nazi lines. The grand jury named Iacardi and Lt. Lo Dolce as murder perpetrators with others aiding, stating Holohan died from poison and gunfire, body later weighted and dumped in Lake Orta. Holohan’s body found in 1949.
Des Moines Iowa Gov Leo A Hoegh urged motorists to slow down for Labor Day weekend noting nine Iowa deaths last year during the holiday. He proposed air patrols with National Guard planes to assist Iowa Highway Patrol aviation observers and discussed emergency speed limits with state officials and safety leaders.
Vice Adm. Alfred M. Pride said US forces are keeping up with Chinese military buildup in South China opposite Formosa. He noted continuing development of installations on the mainland but believed US strength sufficient to meet any Red moves in the Formosa area.
Rain cooled flareups after a massive fire at the Standard Oil refinery in Whiting Indiana. Guards blocked inner zones while 800 residents evacuated waited for sewer and gas cleanup before returning home. Two killed, hundreds injured in the explosion and blaze. About 70 injury or property damage claims filed with the company.
A gravel pit near Turin Iowa yields an essentially intact normal American Indian skeleton believed 7 000 to 10 000 years old. A second skeleton found 30 feet away will be moved for study. Iowa and Nebraska anthropologists will examine the finds before transfer to museums.

Illinois Gov. Stratton will send a representative. Ezra Benson's office may attend. Hoegh says the meeting will be nonpolitical.
Alford Fine, the logger involved, says he wishes Una Schmidt and her airman husband Danny and their son Danny Jr. happiness. He plans to travel nationwide to cope and admits he still loves Una but won’t try to win her back.

President Eisenhower obtained a direct telephoned briefing from US delegate Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. on the first day of UN disarmament talks. Hagerty said Eisenhower stayed in touch with the delegation and avoided responding to Truman attacks while approving flood relief allocations for three more eastern states and a White House meeting on Wednesday. He expressed hope the talks could ease tensions and burdens of armament.
In Detroit CIO UAW secretary treasurer Emil Mazey said progress remains distant as clock ticks toward a strike deadline. Special committees adjourned without new progress and will reconvene at 11 am with Nat Weinberg among the few present. Both sides would address including unionized office workers in a guaranteed wage plan offered to plant workers.

Mrs Newhart returned Saturday from a ten day training period at Northwestern Military and Naval Academy Lake Geneva Wisconsin. She is now a water safety instructor and ready to begin classes. The Red Cross operates ten midwest aquatic schools each summer to train in water safety and first aid.
At the Iowa State Fair Des Moines AP two Southern Iowa farmers won top corn show honors. A G Mitchell Packwood won sweepstakes on 10 ears. John Middlekoop Packwood won sweepstakes on 30 ears and the largest ear, best single ear, best peck of shelled seed corn, best standard basket of field corn, and first prize freak ear.

East Moline police say four teenaged boys and a 19 year old girl admitted stealing six cars in a month. The trio were arrested in Morrison and held on bond. Two older youths and a juvenile were released to parents for juvenile court.
