A Bendix air race field of 13 racers was reduced to 12 after William P. Odom withdrew his P-47 Thunderbolt due to a gas leak and high fuel use. Four army fliers joined four P-80 jets in a Cleveland bound group, led by Col. Leon W. Gray. Dick Powell watched as Maj. Cay Albright opened the event at 10:57 a.m. EDT and Gray flew at 12:52:45 EDT.

George Simerman Funeral Set for Sunday in Keota
Funeral services for 84 year old George Simerman, a former Washington county farmer, are scheduled for 2 20 p m Sunday at Keota Federated Church with Rev I N Poston officiating. Burial will follow at Keota cemetery. He died Thursday in Mt Pleasant after three months there. He leaves four daughters from his first marriage, a son, a step daughter, a brother, and two sisters.
