A 40 year old man named Walter Winger was taken into custody after police said he broke into the Hambarger Inn. Officers found a bag he was carrying filled with chocolate bars, the alleged motive in the incident described in the Iowa column.
Des Moines reports the Iowa liquor commission will grant raises to about 123 employees in state stores across several Iowa cities. Some boosts take effect Sept 1, others later. Class B store managers will get $125 monthly, up from $110. about 100 Class A clerks will gain $5 monthly.
In Denison area Mrs. Elsie Nollen, 30, killed herself and six children, ages from 2 to 11, by sealing a CO gas flow in the farm home while her husband was reportedly away drinking. The family car was used to aid the exhaust.
C. E. Bagwell, 57, longtime Iowa City businessman and president of Bagwell's Inc. ladies apparel shop, died at his home of heart disease. He had led the local store for three years after moving from Rockford Illinois, where he worked with Owens Inc a ladies shop.
A fawn on exhibit nearly choked when a bottle nipple remained after withdrawal. Caretaker Mack Coon quickly examined the creature’s esophagus and restored normal condition, ending the incident.
An unmasked bandit about 24 years old robbed the National Tea Co. in Ottumwa near closing time. He threatened several people with a gun and escaped with 25 to 30 dollars. The store manager had just taken 2660 dollars from the register before the robbery.
Humboldt Congregational church welcomed Rev. Hormer Blough who, despite mislaid robes, delivered his inaugural sermon in a regular suit after his attire was mistakenly taken back to Clear Lake by the truckman. The pastor had accepted the Humboldt call Saturday and moved in, aiming to preach Sunday.
State highway commission installs Town City-Glass reflectors on two curves of highway No. 161 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Metal strips bolted to road hold glass buttons that shine at night when head lights strike them, marking the center line for an experiment.
Mrs Dexter C Bloomer of Council Bluffs is credited with devising the first bloomers for girls. The WPA story says she sought a comfortable garment for walking and driving in 1849 and later, creating a full gathered trouser with a wide skirt extending below the knees.
The Washington Municipal Band will travel to Des Moines Wednesday to perform at the state fair from 11 to 12 in the morning and 5 to 6 in the afternoon under Milo Sorden. Six or seven cars will transport the band, with free fair passes for volunteers. O E Schmitt asks volunteers to contact him. Congressman FE C Bicher will speak Thursday at Dutch Creek on Farm Legislation Past and Prospective at St Paul’s Evangelical Church followed by a basket lunch and community program.
Des Moines reports a fair weather forecast for August 30 to September 4 across the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern central plains. Little precipitation is expected with only local showers possible in extreme south portions beginning.
Principal Miss Ethel McCreedy announced junior high pupils may register September 1 and 2 from nine to four at the junior high building. Students should come prepared to buy locker keys for 26 cents in addition to registering.
United Presbyterian congregation votes 71 percent to extend a call to Rev. William M. Nichol Jr. as pastor. he has not yet accepted. He and his wife may move to Washington by October if the call is finalized. In a separate Washington Baptist meeting, Rev. I Fredmund of Newell Iowa is favored to become pastor, with a possible early October start, as he expressed willingness to accept.
BRIGHTON August 30 Robert Hodson escaped with no serious injuries when the car he was driving last night overturned two or three times on the road two miles west of Pleasant Plain. The car, not his own, was badly demolished and the exact cause is unknown.
Miss McCreedy announced registration continues at the high school with completion planned for Wednesday. Juniors register today, sophomores Tuesday, and freshmen Wednesday, with seniors having registered last week. Junior college registration takes place Thursday and Friday.
Miss Rose Goeldner died yesterday afternoon about 2 o clock in Washington county hospital. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 30 p m at the Federated church in Keota with burial in the Keota cemetery. One sister Mrs Murray Axthelm survives along with seven siblings. She had lived on the old Goeldner farm west of Keota with her brother Herman until his death, then moved to town.
Mrs Della Pollard of Oska loosa was a dinner guest of Miss Maggie Foster on Saturday.
The junior boys will demonstrate swimming classes to parents next Thursday at 7:15. Gene Trask leads the event with Don Swimmers and beginners taking part. Dr. Fred Eastwood will present awards to qualifying boys and seating for parents is free.
A circus truck crash in Le Mars Iowa left Stan ton Peterson 27 of Sioux City dead or dying with eye injuries from poles on the vehicle. Andrew Neil son of Sioux City suffered a head injury and was in critical condition with slim chances of recovery. Police noted the rear carnival truck lacked lights.
The high Sunday in Washington reached 94 degrees while the overnight low dipped to 67. Mrs. H. R. Rohwedder of Harper was seen shopping in Washington on Saturday.
Two men pled guilty to the Morningside state bank robbery and were sentenced to 25 years each. Gerald Bush of Kahoke Missouri and Glenn F Smith of Rochester Minnesota received the terms. Smith was arrested yesterday as officers planned to release John Tremmell of Pennsylvania who had been questioned.
Promoter Mike Jacobs announced the Farr Louis heavyweight fight is definitely on for tonight in New York. The showdown between Farr and Louis is scheduled to proceed as planned this evening.
Roberta Stone named to lead music instruction at the junior college and high school beginning with the new school year. Dean Harland Mead outlines a two hour course balancing written work with keyboard and ear training, plus scale patterns and chord progressions. Stone directed high school glee clubs in Canyon, Iowa City and Maquoketa and comes with strong endorsements from university and public school officials. Superintendent Harding praises her diligence, talent development, and says she is an outstanding instructor above average.
Chinese nationalists admit air attack on the 21 936 ton liner President Hoover 50 miles off the Chinese coast injuring seven crew members and three passengers. Six more ships and officials move to evacuate Americans as Washington files a protest and Shanghai port is closed to American merchant ships.
A special ladies night meeting at 6 30 p m Wednesday honors Lew Warren elected international president of Y's Men. Guests include visiting dignitaries Dave Hardy and Oskar Grunow of Dallas and their wives. Invitations extended to Cedar Rapids Muscatine and Ottumwa clubs with Ted Brown guiding a broad program to be announced at the meeting at the M C A.
A tropical disturbance with 96 mph winds roared off the South Atlantic and passed between Ormond Beach and Flagler Beach. The Weather Bureau said the wind would dissipate as it moved inland.
