Heat deaths rise across the eastern half of the nation with 86 fatalities so far and 20 drownings. Michigan reports 15 heat prostration deaths and six drownings. Forecasters warn no relief for at least three days as cooler air moves but temperatures stay high.

News comes of the death of Mrs Arlene Herr Fish 28 in Clinton. She was daughter of Gayle and Gladys Herr and former resident of the county. The body will be moved to Jones funeral home and funeral services set for Monday at two. Elm Grove cemetery burial planned. A fuller obituary to appear in Monday's Journal.
Sam Cain a 56 year old Davenport man is charged with first degree murder in the Aug 21 fatal shooting of Julia Benford a 54 year old Davenport mother of four. Cain admitted the shooting and is held in Scott County jail awaiting a preliminary hearing set for Sept.
Rev T Autry of Guyton Georgia will preach the sermon at the Christian church's morning worship on Sunday. He is the long time pastor of the church and is visiting in the home of Rev and Mrs Polk with his daughter Mrs T U C Polk. The theme will be Being Prepared.
Washington public schools welcome nineteen new teachers for the coming year with internal transfers. High school and junior college gain several instructors. Lincoln and Stewart schools add staff. one elementary post will teach music at Lincoln and Stewart. Notable hires include John McConnell, Grace Miller, Richard Mershon, and Raymond D. Stephens, with additions in vocational agriculture and junior high assignments across multiple buildings.
Knotek Brothers from near Riverside dominate Duroe hog classes at the Iowa State Fair. Entries take grand champion pen of barrows, light weight and heavyweight pens, crossbred barrows, reserve champion in heavyweight barrow over all, plus a grand champion trophy. Washington county representation highlighted by Mrs. Knotek’s report.
Fourteen year old Roy Adams was sentenced to fourteen years in prison for the murder of eight year old Nancy Schuler. The jury of seven women and five men deliberated one hour and twenty two minutes, with the death penalty waived by prosecutors who sought twenty years. The defense claimed the act was unintentional as Adams confessed to smothering Schuler on May 27 when she visited his room to borrow comic books.
The Caroline Mars, the navy’s new flying giant, arrived over Chicago at 8 16 a m on a non stop flight from Honolulu and likely set two records for the Mars amphibious craft. It carried 22 000 pounds payload with 17 crewmen and 26 passengers and flew ahead of schedule to Detroit.

OSTERVILLE MASS Aug 25 Charles Evans Hughes former chief justice of the United States died at the Vianna club and his body was sent to New York for private funeral services at Riverside church. He died at 4 15 PM after a period of illness and his son announced he was sinking. Hughes aged 11? was survived by his son Charles Evans Hughes Jr and two daughters Mrs Catherine Waddell and Mrs Elizabeth Gossett and his wife had died in 1845. He had spent summers at Cape Cod since his wife’s death and recently showed improvement. He was the 11th chief justice and had two terms as New York governor and served as secretary of state in 1921. He helped the Washington naval conference. He was regarded as a great jurist though his broader political bids were notable in 1912 and beyond.
Rain threatened first day as Iowa State Fair hosted the livestock glamor show with 74,147 attending opening day, a new record, and second-largest in 60 years. Grand Champion Barrow was a 195-pound Berkshire from Wi-View Farms Eagle Grove. reserve open-class Chester White owned by G. T. Keen & Sons. 4-H market barrow was Larry Herbold Colfax. FFA grand champion Richard Halstead West Union. Swine show featured 40 percent imagined high-quality hogs and many pens added for open-class judging to begin Monday.

John Meehan and four American soldiers among eight released by Illicit Soviet authorities after a jeep incident near the city hall in the Russian sector. Des Moines radio disc jockey Myron J. Bennett 41 along with Welellowa Printing owner Jack Wolfe were charged in Polk County with conspiracy to accept a bribe in a case linked to tavern operator complaints. Both posted $2 000 bonds and await arraignment in Polk County District Court next week. Bennett was elected to the safety commission in March and has continued his radio duties since leaving his prior post.
