European food conditions show general gains with Vienna and Hamburg as sharp outliers. Hamburg faces severe shortages despite a general European trend toward improved harvests and ongoing ration adjustments across Austria France Germany England and other regions.
An unusually light vote was being cast in the bond election for an addition to the high school building. By 1 50 pm only 165 ballots had been cast and officials expected higher turnout later. Voters can cast ballots at city hall until seven this evening.
A marriage license was issued yesterday at the courthouse to John L. Brown and Phyllis Campbell, both of Fairfield.
Yesterday afternoon a car driven by W. T. Cozard of Cedar Rapids struck a two and a half year old boy, Tyrone Butterbaugh, as he ran across the street. He received a bump on the head and was taken to the county hospital with non serious injuries.
Sanford Zeigler of Fairfield, a state highway commission member, visited Washington to discuss primary road improvements in the county. The commission denied plans to abandon highway No. 1 between Washington and Iowa City and indicated no paving, but aims to improve its condition. The group also heard plans to blacktop No. 81 from its junction with 99 west of West Chester through Wellmata and northward within two years, and a relocation of No. 1 between Brighton and Washington to match No. 92 west of Washington with an old angling road removed.
Acting Secretary Acheson said the United States awaits a written Yugoslav pledge that Tito gave orally to stop attacking foreign planes. He forecast talks to prevent border clashes near Trieste between U S and Yugoslav forces amid frontier violations.

Des Moines August 27 A new record price of 1.15 per pound was paid for the grand champion 4H club baby beef at the State Fair auction. John Morrell & Co Ottumwa purchased the animal owned by 13 year old Edith Spear of Intiznola for 1046.55 dollars. Morrell led bids for the fifth straight year, breaking the prior 1.00 record set in 1938 for an Angus. The 1941 fair had the best animal at only five cents per pound.
Mrs. William Kelly of Washington DC donates 5000 to Iowa Wesleyan college to start a three story social science classroom building fund in memory of Martha McClure Class of 1886. Construction is slated for completion by September 1948.
Waterloo Iowa August 27 Frank Loiacono Brooklyn New York soldier died here today of a broken neck suffered August 28 when he dove into a shallow portion of the Cedar river. Loiacono was a passenger on a troop train which had stopped here.
Nearly five thousand chiropractors from 48 states and England France and Panama attend the golden jubilee lyceum and homecoming of the Palmer school of chiropractic in Davenport Iowa with events marking the milestone.

County Superintendent Lester B Krabill announced the opening year staffing for rural schools. Ninety one teachers cover ninety three schools with eighteen country schools not operating this year. Most schools start next week with a few already underway and two began a week ago.

O. J. Brown begins service as postmaster of Washington succeeding M. C. DeLong who died July 4. Inspectors conducted inventory and formal induction as acting postmaster for six months, with potential continuation. Brown, a longtime local figure, led Washington cavalry in the National Guard and served as lieutenant colonel in the army.

Paris dispatch reports Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov accusing Australia of directing reparations proposals against the Soviet Union. He implied the United States and Great Britain backed Australia while denouncing the Australian delegation's attacks on the Big Four decisions. He did not name specific backers.
John D. Small said another 20 percent reduction in commercial and industrial construction will be implemented. He announced shifting control to housing expeditor Wilson W. Wyatt and cited a weekend conference with reconversion director John R. Steelman, who acted as referee.
