Maurice Rabe 28 of Letts Iowa died August 24 in a San Francisco hospital after injuries from a mysterious assault. He was found beaten in an alley near a theatre with a fractured skull and a broken leg after hanging onto a fire escape rail. Police probe suggests robbery was not the sole motive.
Iowa farmers lose about 30 million dollars yearly as soil erodes from fields into the Mississippi and Gulf of Mexico. Surveys show roughly 15 thousand acres per county affected, totaling about 1.5 million acres statewide with a third in counties where tree growth is the only viable restoration. County agents estimate 2 thousand to 5 thousand acres abandoned from cultivation and annual production losses around 20 million dollars.
Iowa led the nation in livestock value in 1933 with a gross income from livestock at 248 million 294 thousand dollars and cash income at 296 million 96 thousand dollars according to figures from the department of agriculture.

Iowa Daily Press Photo notes that Uncle Benjamin W. Cook, born August 27, 1834 in Appanoose County, Iowa, reaches 100 while living near Moravia with his nephew John Allem. A former partner of Son. Wm. A. Clark, he credits hard work in timber cutting and gold mining, plus kindness and a no worry attitude, for his longevity.
Fred Blick former First United Presbyterian church of Washington pastor of a large church at New Kensington Pa preached two sermons to hundreds at his home church. He baptized John Blick’s baby in the morning service and urged aggressive waiting through prayer while warning against worry. The evening urged Christians to rise and walk and awaken church members to use their spiritual powers.
Weekend picnickers trigger state liquor law crackdown as the Prohibition League of York County launches its campaign offering a $50 reward for evidence of Sunday law violations.
The Brighton area could host a government meat canning plant if a local factory meets requirements. An inspection by George Keller and a team will determine suitability at the Schaeffer Bros. vegetable canning plant. If approved, up to 100 Washington county workers would be employed under a state relief project.
Vigilance committees of non union men and townspeople served notice that any further violence in the world’s largest onion patch would be dealt with summarily. The threat followed last Saturday when non union men seized Okey Odell farm union leader and beat him severely.

This week marks the Dutch Creek fair with a 2 30 pm address by Rep RE Richer and an 7 pm talk by ex Governor Dan W Turner. A chicken dinner runs 4 00 to 7 80 pm, plus concerts by Washington Concert band and an evening home talent show. Softball games feature county teams in the morning and town teams in the afternoon leading to a final championship game.
On Wellman Bridge about a mile and a quarter southwest of town Saturday a Ford driven by Harold Dean Schuck collided with a trailer and a car carrying Joe Kehoe and a 15 year old Seouck. No injuries were reported though the trailer and cars sustained damage.
Work relief projects in Henry County were approved by the emergency relief committee and await state approval. Most projects are slated to begin Tuesday September 4 with Henry Vollmer supervising countywide efforts. The Washington Park plan includes Sunset and Central park improvements and 75 stumps removal. road widening at Sunset and other park work.
A Sunday heat wave in Iowa lifted thermometers from near freezing to the mid nineties, with Estherville and Waterloo at 40s and Clarinda peaking at 94. The blistering stretch has been linked to 720 heat related deaths across eight states, led by Missouri and Illinois, according to vital statistics bureaus.
Hollywood reports that Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks grow closer to reconciliation aided by Joseph N. Schenck the film producer acting as peacemaker. A photo shows Fairbanks greeting Schenck on his arrival in Los Angeles.
Chester C. Davis, AAA administrator, envisions cooperatively planned production to supply markets at home and abroad and to restore fair prices for farmers. He said reductions and adjustments will continue through 1935 with emphasis on grass and soil improving crops, while maintaining some commodity programs. Davis urged farmer understanding and management to carry forward any new plan.
American railways ask the Interstate Commerce Commission for a wide rise in freight rates to raise annual revenue by 170 million dollars. The move, by the Association of Railway Executives, follows wage and materials cost pressures and a Atlantic City heads convention. Most commodities would be affected as the railways seek funds to cover higher operating expenses.
The state liquor commission announced plans to appoint special distributors to handle liquor distribution in towns with demand but no state store. These agents, often existing retailers, will sell state liquor as an added department. A commission spokesman said thorough study is needed before launching the program.
The Washington Municipal band concluded its Sunset park season with one of its largest crowds. Eleven concerts have been played, ten contracted and one extra by Fairfield Municipal band. Automobiles filled drives as families and visitors gathered, with out of state plates present. The program featured Poet and Peasant and performances by William Stewart and a drum demonstration by William Cox. Next concert will be Saturday night, no Sunday show.
