President Eisenhower urges Congress to restore foreign aid funds cut from his request, warning that the reduction could jeopardize national security. He asks that the measure be returned to conference to align with national interests amid a $3.72 billion bill compromise.
Parents of 17 year old Mary Lily Roberts say they have given up hope of finding her alive after a lover’s lone gunman abducted her and wounded a companion in a 44000 acre wildlife refuge. About 130 volunteers joined 300 expected searchers using foot, plane, boat and horse as officials scour lakes and terrain. Sheriff Dean West led the effort in Marion with a state trooper noting the case has boiled down to drudgery.
Washington announced it severed diplomatic relations with the Dominican Republic after an OAS vote. About 40 embassy staff are recalled from Ciudad Trujillo, with possibly a dozen consular officials remaining pending permission from the Dominican government. A friendly power, likely Britain, will represent U S interests. US travelers will not have diplomatic protection due to lack of consular treaty and immunity.
In Detroit Kennedy labels Nixon's boast of U S military and global leadership as a siren call. He argues security and leadership are slipping and the balance of world power shifts toward the Soviet Red China bloc. Kennedy urges a large defense buildup and unfreezing military funds approved by Congress. He praises the VFW for backing stronger defense.
The Department of Agriculture announced the 1961 wool and mohair incentive payments for the 1961 marketing year from April 1, 1961 to March 31, 1962. Wool pays 62 cents per pound, unchanged from 1955–60. mohair pays 73 cents, up from 70. Howard Lins notes the 1961 wool price matches prior years. Payments occur in summer 1962 after the marketing year ends. County ASC offices are processing 1959 year payments.
Washington reports conferees from the House and Senate agreed on a multi billion dollar public works spending bill for projects nationwide. The House had approved 3.9148 billion dollars and the Senate 4.0300 billion, with the final total not yet announced.

Moscow reports George Payne Winters Jr. first secretary of the U.S. embassy is expelled for activities incompatible with diplomatic status. The action follows prior expulsions linked to an intelligence case and comes 11 days after the air attache left. Winters, 40, from Denver, had been in Moscow since 1958 and was due to depart next month.

Secretary of State Christian A Herter called Cuban Premier Castro a dictator and accused his regime of open contempt for the inter American system. He cited Raul Roa’s remarks as showing continued reliance on the Sino Viet bloc and refusal to submit to democratic principles. He urged Cuba to renounce Communist aid and accept free elections.
The next Washington County NFO meeting has moved from Monday to Tuesday September 6 due to Labor Day. An NFO organizational meeting will be at Wellman August 29 with national director Allen Spurgeon speaking. refreshments will be served and women are invited.

Sheriff Roy Copland reports more than 100 marketable hogs stolen from Hancock County farms. The Merle Lane farm east of Bowen lost 103 hogs, earlier 30 hogs were taken from Wendel Cook at West Point and Clarence Anslet near Carthage.

He will discuss The Changing Curriculum, addressing an audience of county teachers. The program is led by Dwight G. Bode with regional consultant Melvin D. Anderson and Dale Chismore expected to attend.
