U S officials report North Korean prisoners claimed Russia supplied weapons after 1949. A prisoner described seeing sealed Russian boxes and weapons including 24 76MM and 12 122MM artillery pieces. UN observers noted questioning occurred without threats or rewards. The Pentagon said reports also indicated 120 heavy tanks arrived from Manchuria.
Mr and Mrs Louis Havel of Ainsworth avoided the worst by vacationing in Kansas and Nebraska. A stump blasting blast near their home sent a 65 pound stump 300 feet into the air and shattered the roof, landing in the kitchen and causing damage. A carpenter works on repairs expected to take several days.
President Truman ordered a paper seizure of U S railroads to avert a nationwide strike by the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors. The plan deputizes management to run trains, with unions pledging to work for the government. The seizure, effective 5 pm EDT Sunday, aims to keep rail service flowing for national security while wage talks stall.
Principal Edward Kelly announced the Junior High PTA monthly meetings. September covers pupil roles at home with panel including Rev C R Reed and E J Kelly. Future topics include extracurriculars, social life, health, relationships, and education week events.
The Screwball Parade will be held at 1 20 p m on Wednesday September 13 during the Washington Corn Fiesta. Parade committee members are Lester Hamil William Perdock Ralph Martin and Tom Duncan they seek entries with a $1 fee. Prizes total seven with amounts 35 30 25 20 15 10 and 5.
In a foggy collision off the Golden Gate, the navy hospital ship Benevolence sank after striking the freighter Mary Luckenbach. At least 18 died and about 500 were rescued. 15 navy nurses were aboard, with one nurse dying after being pulled from the water.
John E. Keating 76 of 316 East Van Buren died at his home Saturday morning after a period of illness. He was born September 25, 1874 northeast of Washington and was the last of eight children. Survived by a nephew Claire Keating Washington and a niece Mrs Ralph McCreedy Washington. Funeral at 2 PM Monday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Earl Longfellow officiating. burial Elm Grove Cemetery.
Riverside report of a Friday afternoon accident in the Dale Howard yard. Three sons Larry 13 Bobby 7 Gale 5 and neighbor Billy Luckey were in a treehouse when the boards broke. Larry may have a double broken left arm and Bobby a fractured right shoulder. Gale and Billy sustained bumps and shock but were not seriously injured. They were taken to University Hospital by Ivan Shradel in his station wagon.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce announced a model air meet at the city airport Sunday with 1:30 p.m. main event after morning time trials at 9:30. Events include team racing with four planes and combat racing with two planes. Entrants come from the Quad-Cities Galesburg and nearby towns as part of the Iowa Illinois Model Association. Jaycees will run a lunch stand at the airport.
The Washington Corn Fiesta features an amateur contest with two divisions. Division I for under 17 and Division II for 17 and older, with judging on September 13 at 3:00 pm for Division I and 1:30 pm for Division II. Prizes are 25, 15 and 10 dollars per division. Entry blanks appear in today’s Journal with a September 10 deadline.
Funeral services were held Friday at 2 PM at the Christian church for Mrs. Effer Cupp. Rev T C Folk conducted the service and burial followed in Keota cemetery. Casketbearers were Leslie Dunlap Fred Bourgeois Roy Kephart Leslie Beenbossora Wilmer Lauderman and Don Darbyshire. Mrs Ira Morrison sang two solos.
Winston Churchill charged that during two years the labor government allowed British factories to manufacture and ship machine tools for Russia and Poland. He alleged Russian inspectors entered workshops making confidential equipment for the British army and urged ousting the socialist government.
Army officials told congressional critics that there are not enough doctors to handle X rays for inductees. Until more physicians are available the army will hire private radiologists to take and interpret X rays. Rep Henry Talle urged a congressional investigation into a $22 500 Milwaukee X ray incident calling it malfeasance in office. One spokesman said a $5 per X ray fee is not excessive and private interpretation would cost twice that.
Vice Admiral Charles T. Joy, commander of U S Naval Forces in the Far East, warns the Chinese Communists to think twice before attempting to invade Formosa. He says the U S Navy will be alert and ready across the Taiwan Strait and notes intelligence reports vary on immediacy of attack. His 7th Fleet protection role traces to Korea crisis.
DES MOINES Iowa safety campaign statistics show 85 injured in 276 Iowa accidents across 74 counties since the drive began. The Iowa Safety Congress reported 70 accidents and 2 injuries in the 24 hours ending 5 pm yesterday, with the campaign aimed at saving one life daily.
Lyndon Burris and Gladys Hop ping married this morning at Riverside. They entered Winga's Cafe at 10 o clock to find the Washington Coffee Club serenading them with Let Me Call You Sweetheart.
Allied forces trapped about 2,000 Communist troops in the western Naktong bridgehead and began a deliberate starvation operation. In the east, Reds pressed a three pronged assault near Pohang forcing South Korean troops to retreat while U N ships bombarded rail lines to Russia. South of Taegu, U S 25th Division repelled four attempts to seize Sobuksan mountain with at least 39 Communist dead. MacArthur warned the lull could be ominous as the bridgehead remained threatened and fighting paused along the Naktong. The 2nd division held the line, blocking escape routes and blocking supplies to the trapped force.
Des Moines Iowa forecast shows mostly cloudy sky tonight and Sunday with chances of showers in the southeast. Warmer temperatures prevail with lows near 55 to 60 and highs around 75 to 80, plus easterly winds 8 to 12 mph. The outlook calls for fair, warm conditions Monday with highs in the mid 80s. Previous day recorded a maximum of 82 and a minimum of 72.
