A McGregor column notes that dandelion roots join ginseng and golden seal as herbal staples. Dealers in medicinal herbs offer twenty five cents a pound for the roots this fall, with W. H. Elwell among local sellers.
Edward Hutton, 19, of Chicago, Sr., drowned while swimming the Cedar River above the dam with friend Hal Felman, 19. Felman, exhausted, barely reached shore after pulling Hutton under. later, Hutton's body was recovered.
Charles Handy 21 of Spencer waived preliminary hearing on a manslaughter charge after an Aug. 16 auto crash near Spirit Lake that killed Mrs Floyd Lamb 28 of Milford and injured seven others. Bond set at 2500. Lamb returning to farm with husband and two children when Lamb car collided head on with Handy. Sheriff noted Handy’s car had passed another in a line of traffic and met the Lamb vehicle during heavy rain and hazardous conditions.
Donald B. Tade 26 a member of headquarters troop 113th Cavalry Iowa National Guard died in an automobile accident during maneuvers in Louisiana. He volunteered in March and was sent to Camp Bowie Texas. He was a farm youth son of Mr and Mrs W B Tade living near Hillsboro. Relatives lack accident details and were told to not open the coffin.
Kenneth R. Karr, 17, of Des Moines, won a $5,000 scholarship in the National Ford Good Drivers league contest. He received the award and a silver trophy from Edsel B. Ford in Detroit. Karr, son of drug-store owners, graduated from West High School in June and plans to study engineering at Texas A&M College Station this fall after enrolling there. The contest drew finalists from 48 states and the District of Columbia with over 170,000 participants aged 14 to 18.
Burlington report says CGC A Mucha of Muscatine and Ernest A Green of Newton deny larceny from a building charges after nearly $5,000 in checks were stolen from a local tavern. They were arrested in Illinois and the checks found in their car. Bond set at $1,000 each.
Michael Lawlor a 3 year old of Victor injured while playing with a corn sheller. Flesh stripped from two fingers of his right hand. He was taken to St Francis hospital where a bone was broken and a ten don cut.
A Brighton youth Cecil Ruggles age 15 drove a borrowed car off the road between Brighton and Coppock. The car overturned, Ruggles escaped injury, the car valued about 50 to 64 dollars. Ruggles jailed for driving without license. owner A R Connelly charged for permitting an unauthorized driver. Justice Fillmore set a 5.30 dollar fine and costs for both. In a separate incident near West Chester two cars driven by James Reighard and Clarence Benson collided four and a half miles northwest on Highway 81 causing about 100 dollars in damages with no injuries.
London shows Lord Beaverbrook minister of supply expressed a wish for United States to join the war but said the decision rests with the American people. He spoke after returning from Washington where he discussed British supplies and attended the Roosevelt-Churchill talks at sea.
CG C. B. Luellen and his son of Minburn capture the grand champion stallion award in the Belgian horse division at the state fair with Colonel. Raymond Volger of Ogden takes reserve. Marceau, a Percheron stallion owned by the Ralph Smith farm of Kansas City, earns grand champion honors in its breed. Other awards include Clydesdale and additional Percheron placements by Willhoit and Prince in Batavia and Fairfield.
In the past week eleven new cars and trucks were licensed in Washington county raising August total to 33. The county now has 6 813 licensed automobiles with 1941 licenses 222 more than a year ago. Truck licenses for the year reach 944 114 more than last year.
The Sugar Creek congregation near Wayland in Henry county leads several thousand Mennonites from coast to coast to the large conference near Kalona. Gatherings take place at Lower Deer Creek church with Johnson and Wellman listed as host churches. Sessions are in a big tent near the church, with big days on Wednesday and Thursday.
In Des Moines three finalists Keith Koch of Waverly Butler Itel of Hampton and George Lewis of Woodburn advanced in the Iowa boys 4-H health championship at the state fair.
Prime Minister Peter Frazier said New Zealand would cooperate fully with the United States in any action in the Far East. He spoke to reporters before a courtesy call on Secretary of State Cordell Hull in Washington.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill leads a conference of 40 to 50 new rural teachers at the Washington county courthouse. A separate session for returning teachers is set for next Saturday while most country schools plan to open next week.
Durocs awarded for produce of sow with Edward Chabal of Riverside, Iowa taking second and third places for Duroc entries. Knotek brothers of Riverside, Iowa earned multiple honors including second and fourth in various Duroc categories. Edward Chabal captured first in junior show with additional ninth place noted.
Lieut. Comm. Gene Tunney, former heavyweight champion, lands in Boston during a 16,000 mile air tour to interview applicants for the naval reserve physical development program. He oversees the navy’s physical development drive and tours city facilities.
Washington residents sign petitions calling for a bond vote of 28000 to fund a municipal outdoor swimming pool. More than 300 signatures are needed, equal to 25 percent of ballots cast in the latest city election, before the council may call an election. The committee plans to present the petitions next Monday and continues studying successful Iowa pools for guidance on operation and self sufficiency.

The county treasurer received a concealed anonymous twenty dollar bill with a printed note asking to place the money in the county home fund. The unsigned note bore a dot shaped mark in a small space and the envelope was postmarked in Washington. A receipt was issued to unknown and the money credited to the county home fund.
Industry leaders suggest new car production for the current model year may fall below prior forecasts. The OPA and the Office of Production Management already project a six percent curtailment through July 1 1942. An automobile source says output may drop to 25 to 35 percent of the 1941 level, with the real impact after four months.
Nancy Ellen Cooper two and a half, daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Cooper of Southhaven Michigan, died when she fell from a car driven by her grandfather Frank Clough of Southaven six miles east of Boone. The mother attempted to lock the right rear door at the time of impact.
The county plans a yearly exhibit at the state fair with Mrs. Kephart’s leadership credited for the extensive preparation and thoughtful planning that brings county recognition through diligent work.
The Washington county board of supervisors fixed the annual budget estimate for county funds and announced a hearing for 10:00 AM on Sept 8 at the courthouse. The 1942 estimate calls for an $8,300 increase in taxation due to a larger county hospital maintenance fund levy, while several funds are trimmed, and hospital bonds plus emergency bridge and other costs rise. The estimated tax rate is $11.69 per $1,000, up ten cents from this year, and the one mill levy would raise $26,896.
The Senate Commerce Committee unanimously approves a resolution for a special committee to investigate the gasoline and fuel oil shortage along the Atlantic seaboard and a separate inquiry into the defense priority system administration.
In Ottumwa Iowa Mrs Donald Davis of Unionville died and her 27 year old husband remained in serious condition from poisoning believed linked to food or drink. The couple fell ill after returning from a trip to Des Moines on Friday.

Thirty five encephalitis cases are reported to the state health department this month, lifting Iowa’s annual total to 43 with at least two deaths in Sioux City. The 1940 total was 38, indicating a sharp rise.
Charles A Maiden of Marshalltown a former Winfield resident died Saturday at Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church. He was born June 18 1879 near Winfield and worked for Van Dyke elevator then Kessler Grain in Marshalltown. He married Galu Boileau January 2 1902 and moved to Marshalltown 37 years ago. Surviving are his wife three daughters a son and several grandchildren plus siblings.
Harvey Slick named new manager of Rob-Air Footwear replacing Rex Frank who moved to Belle Plain. The Slicks arrive from Oelwein where he led a dance band and played drums. they attend Methodist church and reside at 502 North Iowa Avenue Washington.
