Iowa board of assessment and review sets the 1931 state levy at 9 mills, including 5 mills for general state taxes and 1 mill for the soldiers' bonus, down from 11 mills last year. The $7,960,000 revenue was approved unanimously, with funds spread by county auditors based on completed assessments.
Vatican City August 25 The Catholic church and Mussolini government near a settlement ending months of estrangement. An accord would permit Azione Cattolica activities in religious fields after the government disbanded the group for alleged political activity violating the Lateran pact.
Prohibition Director Woodcock announced new orders to bar women from assisting enforcement, extending beyond decoy bans. The rule targets accompaniment of agents in gathering evidence against night clubs and other enforcement activities, following reports of women purchasing liquor to aid cases.
Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, 90, of the U S Supreme Court, is gravely ill at Beverly Farms Massachusetts after overwork and a cold. A nurse is attending him as physicians say there is no immediate danger. Family members report the elderly jurist has been exhausted since Saturday.
In Hankow and Shanghai on August 25 a massive storm followed widespread flood damage. Thousands died or drowned as flood waters carried corpses and debris. Ships and relief efforts faced danger as heavy rains and typhoons threatened from Shanghai to Shansi. China seeks liberal wheat credit from the United States Farm Board amid flood relief efforts in Shanghai and Hunan Kiangsi regions.

Gary Garrison announces the district convention set for November 27 attracting about 100 De Molays from 12 cities. Final tribute honors Amos Alberson, who greatly contributed to Masonry and DeMolay circles as the local chapter is named for him.
The fourth period of Music Month was observed Sunday morning in the Haskins church. Miss Marjorie Edwards presided. Frances Dawson read a poem August. LaVaughn Leffler and Mildred Frey played a piano duet. Mrs S F Wenger sang Love That Will Not Let Me Go. Mrs B J Frey interpreted the hymn, and Miss Martha Mathers played piano accompaniments.
The Fall Festival entertainment committee has contracted the Long and Williams orchestra of Mt. Pleasant for the platform dance, repeating their role as a main amusement attraction from last year.
Ten representative cities plan to spend about 3.60 per capita this winter on relief work. They aim to raise 57,047,000 for relief, funding about 114,000 men five months at 25 a week or double that at 12.50 a week, roughly the cost of one battleship.

At Tipton Iowa Arthur Fogg's cow reactors to bovine tuberculosis will be shipped after lactation while three other cows were previously shipped. Fogg pleaded guilty to contempt of court for balking testing. William Butterbrodt and William R Hogan pleaded not guilty and are bound over to the September term on $800 bond.
The United States federal farm board will be officially requested to grant favorable terms for selling wheat to flood victims. The request targets credit length and interest rate to ease relief efforts.
Willis Jones Robert Shannon Peter Jungbluth Robert Hammer and Walter Jungbluth spoke to the Rotary Club about a six week eastward tour with the Beacon Institute of Oberlin Ohio. They joined about fifty midwest youths visiting historic New York and New England sites and shared details on equipment cooking organization and people met. The group beat Rotarians 1 0 in a wall board baseball game.
Otto Knop arranged the pool site on the Zeigler property at the west end of Sunset Park. Construction will start soon to be ready for skating this winter. Ample parking will accompany the pool. Season tickets go on sale immediately under Mr Wonell at 5 dollars for individuals and 10 dollars for families. Mr Knop plans to relocate his family here soon.
Kenneth Cline swept Mark West 6-0 6-1 in a singles match. Miller and Kolesick beat Shrader and Griffin 6-0 6-3. Mae Mangold triumphed over Loretta Cantoni 6-2 6-1 in girls singles. Nita Corbin and Frances Boyd defeated Gert Hammer and Ossie Jungbluth 6-3 7-5 in girls doubles.
