Dutch Creek Fair Announces Premium List For August

The Dutch Creek fair at Valley church and Singmaster place opens Thursday August 27 with premium prizes announced tonight. Senator Oméith W. Brookhart will speak in the afternoon and Washington band will provide music. Big chicken dinners, evening play, and a large crowd are planned with numerous cash and merchandise awards across farm produce canned goods displays fancy needlework and quilts plus food donations for supper.

Baker Addresses Wellman Crowd

Norman Baker of Muscatine spoke before a large crowd in Wellman city park. The advertised debate with editor Coffey did not occur as Coffey was absent. Baker opposed the T B test the AMA public utilities and the Federal farm board and said KTNT would return to the air sometime.

Load of Melons Triggers Pileup On Rural Road

A truckload of watermelons parked on a hill west of Columbus Junction caused a multi-vehicle crash Saturday night near Batavia. J. D. Hupp, 57, suffered a broken right arm and head injuries and is hospitalized. several others were injured as cars collided while attempting to avoid the melon laden truck and a subsequent car crash. The incident ended with clockwork delays, a driver carrying alcohol, and police intervention.

Contempt Fines In Cedar County Tuberculosis Protest

Arthur Fogg was fined 50 dollars and jailed one day for contempt in Cedar county court over protests against the state compulsory bovine tuberculosis test law. William R. Hogan and William C. Orchestra and Band Rehearsals Start This Week

The Washington schools announce first rehearsals for orchestra and band this week. Orchestra meets Tuesday August 25 at 2 00 pm and band Wednesday August 26 at 2 00 pm in the high school gym. Director Milburn McKay invites all senior and junior high students to report for tryouts and potential placement across groups A B and C with future grading and movements as needed.

Dr G M Jones Killed in Auto Accident

In Brighton a report states Dr G M Jones died in an automobile accident in Long Beach California on Saturday. Funeral services will be at Green Mound church near Trenton Thursday at ten. The remains will arrive at Mt Pleasant Wednesday with a nephew Wilmer Jones. Jones lived in Wayland from 1899 to 1915 before moving to California. His wife, sister of Guy Gardner, died about nine years ago.

Funeral Tuesday for Mrs. White in Sigourney area

Funeral services for Mrs. Kintng L. White will be held Tuesday morning at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev A. A. in charge. Burial at Elio Grove cemetery. Mrs. White died at 300 West Monroe Sunday at 7 15 after about two weeks of illness. She was born August 17 1851 in Hamilton County Ohio, daughter of George Pierson and Jane McLaughlin Pierson. She and Milton White married July 31 1868 in Mason County, later moving to farms near Sigourney and in 1899 to a Washington County farm, then to Washington in 1801. Mr. White was a rural mail carrier for fourteen and a half years. he died May 28 1927. Surviving children include Clara Russell of Washington Olive Kiesling of Brooklyn New York and Ethel Hofmeister of Chicago. Four brothers and several sisters also survive. relatives note her willingness to endure suffering.

Cuban Revolution Seems Near End

In Havana on August 24 the loyalty of the Cuban army and broad public refusal to join the revolt appeared to end the uprising. Most rebel leaders were imprisoned two weeks after the revolt began. Only Miguel Mariano Gomez, former Havana mayor and fugitive, and Mendez Senate remained at large as significant insurgents.

Wellman Visitor Suffers Arm Injury From Box Collision

Velma Phend 15 of Iowa City sustained a deep laceration above the elbow after her arm struck a mailbox while riding on the running board of a car in Wellman. Ten stitches were required and she was taken to her aunt Mrs. Al Miller’s home where she was visiting. the driver was Frederick Duncan of Los Angeles and she rode with cousins Cole and Ward Miller.
