A barn on Carl Sierens property near the park in Keota burned to the ground Friday evening. Firemen were called about 8 p.m. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
Mrs Raymond Gerdes of rural Ainsworth caught a six pound channel catfish from Lake Darling, her first fish ever. She fished from shore with her husband and son Steve using a rod and reel and 20 pound test line with commercial bait. The family recently took up fishing and she says it is catching on fast.
More than 200 fishing boats surrounded the Mutsu in Mutsu Port to protest Japan's first nuclear powered ship's initial trial run. The 8,214 ton Mutsu, tied up since completion in 1972 amid safety doubts, had its test voyage planned off the Pacific coast as scheduled despite protests from local residents and a softened stance from the Mutsu Fishery Cooperative Association.
Rob Johnson Jr of the Marion Men 4H Club son of Mr and Mrs Robert Johnson of Washington captured the carcass championship at the Washington County Fair. Oscar Mayer and Company Davenport processed the cutout data. Johnson posted 4 inch backfat 32.1 inch carcass 4.95 square inch loin eye and 64 percent muscling. Reserve went to Bob Witthoft of the Jackson Boys with a 303 inch carcass 1 inch backfat 6.15 loin eye and 63.5 muscling. Officials praised the group as the best across eight county fairs with Elson Hans Cedar Rapids discussing swine management.
In Stockton California a life-term convict charged with murder allegedly stabbed Deputy District Attorney James Hammerstone, 29, in the back with a crude inch knife as jurors watched. Hammerstone was hospitalized with back and arm wounds described as satisfactory and stable. Ernest Herrera, 22, an inmate at Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, was being returned to the courtroom after lunch when the attack occurred.
Ann Culver wife of Democratic Senate candidate John C Culver speaks to local Democrats at a West Des Moines home on inflation budget reform and social security while outlining her husband’s plans. Other candidates present include Keith Dunton Sandy Dalziel and T A Jones.
Senator Henry M. Jackson reports near agreement with the Soviet Union allowing more Jewish emigration in return for U S trade concessions. He cites Russian willingness to trade and notes Congress may revoke favorable terms if commitments are broken. Kissinger acted as middleman in hard bargaining.
Zone 13 weather reports mostly fair skies and a gradual warmup through Sunday. Today highs near 77 with southeast winds under 15 mph, tonight turning south with lows around 60. Sunday highs near 80 plus with lighter winds.
Arvid Anderson of Crawfordsville led a four pig team to top honors in both on hoof and carcass Pig Derby at the Washington County Fair. Nine or ten pigs were weighed April 6 with four shown August at the fair.

The white house seeks a broader strategy as the stock market falls, food costs rise, auto sales drop, and Pan Am seeks subsidies amid fuel and demand pressures. A national health insurance push and an autumn summit are planned.
Ray and Democratic challenger James Schaben clashed on campaign financing and special interests during a heated KCAU-TV debate in Sioux City. Schaben accused Ray of accepting banker and lobbyist money, while Ray defended tax policy and warned against overreaction to fiscal changes.
