A Des Moines column notes JT. D. Rutters, 74, of Woodward enjoyed the fair on Friday. He attended the Iowa fair for the sixty third consecutive year, highlighting his longtime connection to the event and local community.

Boone records two new infantile paralysis cases in the Karl Longnecker family. Johnny Longnecker, 19, and William Longnecker, 22 months, join siblings in the outbreak. The father teaches at Boone High School and Junior High and serves as naturalist at Ledwes State Park.
Mrs Eva Miller 76 of Grimes and W F Stanfield 74 of Boone were among those tuning up for the fiddle contest at the state fair. Miller has played since 15. Stanfield took it up seriously in recent years. About 100 entrants perform five minutes each.
Two new influenza or paralysis cases were admitted to isolation hospital in Waterloo bringing the total since August 1 to 18. The patients are Corrine Crooks, 5, granddaughter of Mr and Mrs E A Wetbel, and John L Sheets, 21, son of Mr and Mrs John M Sheets. A General Truck Driver's union picnic scheduled for Sunday was postponed due to the epidemic.
Fifteen thousand rodeo fans saw Gene Ross of Sayre Oklahoma win the steer wrestling title in five seconds. Jess Goodspeed of Wetumka Oklahoma won the calf roping in 14.4 seconds. Burel Mulkey of Salmon Idaho led bronco riding while Kid Pletcher of Hugo Colorado, top all around, was dumped by a Brahma steer on the first jump.
Sumner Mc Cracken of Richland was reelected president of the William Penn college board of trustees Roy Williams of Oskaloosa was named vice president and Paul N. Russell secretary Dr Edgar H Stranahan is the new dean who addressed the Iowa Friends meeting on Penn college role in education and religion
Mrs Ruth Norsiklan 28 testifies in Omaha Neb court that she declined a doctor's examination arguing a woman has privacy rights. Judge Lawrence Welch asks lawyers for more law on her right to stay dressed during the medical procedure. She seeks compensation from a tea company employee over an auto crash she says harmed her voice and singing career.
Marie Hager of Ames suffered facial injuries from a daytime crash near Osceola. Leslie Grigsby of Boone was fined 125 dollars for the accident in which Hager lost an eye.
German planes renewed large scale raids on the south and southeast coasts of England and near London. British coastal guns and air defences fought back as Dover area gunfire blasted German positions. An unofficial report claimed several German planes were shot down while German claims said a British armed merchant ship was sunk.
San Diego police intensify a nationwide search for Thomas J. Saunders charged with the slaying of Maude Raymond. Saunders a 62 year old bus ticket solicitor from Iowa is described with height five feet six inches weight 130 pounds and light complexion and is linked to aliases H J Henderson S J Saunders and Harry J Clark. He was last seen at a bus company depot and detectives suspect he may be hiding in Los Angeles.
Percy Blount of Decorah ambulance service broke all his previous records last week by driving at unprecedented speeds. The event highlighted his skill and prompted praise from local officials for safe, efficient emergency response.
If rain or cold weather makes it inadvisable to hold the Sunday evening union church service in Central Park the meeting will be held in the United Presbyterian church at 7 30. Dr F W Eastwood will preach the sermon and John Lloyd Hughes will sing a vocal solo.
A cold drenching rain curtailed attendance at the Iowa state fair and forced cancellation of this afternoon's thrill day. The horseshoe pitching tournament was postponed but secretary Arthur Corey said the contest would finish on schedule Tuesday. Continued rain may cancel the evening program. Large tarpaulins covered stages and equipment.
Negotiations over Transylvania concessions collapsed in Turnu Severin with a three and a half hour session ending in hopeless deadlock. Romania refused Hungary’s request for a detailed ceded-territory statement prompting calls for outside intervention by Germany and Italy. Greece vows to resist any Italian attack after a British briefing from Athens reports Metaxas remains firm.
Four young men named Joe Simmering Lloyd Ferns Donald Simmering and Marion Sheets captured about a peck of sponge mushrooms four miles south of town along Main creek. The find reflects unusual trophies for this season likely due to damp weather.
A semi-trailer loaded with six tons of groceries rolled down an alley and crashed into Safe Kenyon’s cafe in Atlantic injuring six people including several named locals. Truck driver John Perk said he left the vehicle parked with the brake set and gears reverse. The tractor drove 12 feet into the front of the building missing seated customers.
Blount traveled to Donegal Pennsylvania and back in 48 hours to bring patient Mrs. John Hanson home to Decorah.
A troop train carrying Troop F of the 113th Cavalry returned to Washington from Camp Ripley Minnesota just before eight this morning. Captain Jay Brown reports the men in good condition aside from a few colds and their horses in good shape despite moorland bogging at Ripley. The unit preferred Camp Ripley over Camp Dodge and enjoyed the heavy maneuvers. The regiment may reorganize into a reconnaissance outfit with three troops mechanized and three horse mounted, with details due in a week or ten days.
James Hoag of the Iowa Press Association reports Washington County will be well represented in Who's Who in Iowa. The publication, backed by the association, aims to document notable men and women across education, music, banking, stock raising, and agriculture. The 25-year-old group organized in 1915 runs a permanent central office and will publish 99 county histories to preserve current Iowa figures for future generations.
The state highway maintenance office reports the north end of the new North Second Avenue pavement will not open until next week. Some sections already allow cross-street traffic, and within a few days through traffic is expected to resume.
An increasing number of high school boys are expected to enroll in homemaking courses this fall, after a four day conference. Teachers note boys are candid and inquisitive about girls, and will engage actively with instructors. Mrs Margarite Havens, Garden Grove, spoke to the group of 226 women teachers.
Des Moines figures Richard R Rollins of Bankers Trust Co and Robert Root of Blair Bonner Co announce a new deluxe shoe shining enterprise. The concept brings a professional parlor to the Des Moines businessman in his own office.
Twenty six persons were granted licenses to operate motor vehicles after examinations conducted by a state highway patrol member in Washington on Friday. Recipients include Marion Durst Martha Ashby Ruth Thatcher Edith Nicholson Edith White Harold Maxwell and Robert Koheler among others. five failed, three received chauffeurs licenses and one failed the tests.
About ten shoe shiners will be carefully selected for frequenting private and confidential offices. Applicants' character will be investigated, a physical examination given, and fingerprints taken.
Washington August 24 The White House announced Harry L Hopkins has submitted his resignation as secretary of commerce and the post has been offered to Jesse Jones of Texas. The effective date is undecided and Hopkins says ill health prompted the move while he had hoped to recover over the summer. Louis Johnson has been offered the undersecretary post and will discuss with President Roosevelt next week. Hopkins praises national defense efforts in his resignation letter.
Judge Charles A. Dewey of Des Moines accepted an invitation to address the annual meeting of the bar association of Iowa's sixth judicial district in Washington next Thursday September 5. The event includes a turkey dinner at noon and a possible brief address by the presiding judges J W Patterson Frank Beehly and P J Siegers.
Supt. B A Ralston announced that schools will not open Monday September 2 Labor Day. To cooperate with the community and business closures in Washington, classes begin Tuesday September 3 with all day sessions.
