Rev. V A Hauber a St Ambrose College faculty member Davenport filed a $37300 damage suit against Harvey Hackbarth of Algona after injuries from a June 10 collision between Hauber’s car and Hackbarth’s truck two miles east of Algona on Highway 15.
Dean Mason Ladd of the University of Iowa law college announced four students earned first-year scholarships. Named are David Rayre of Ames, Roland Grefe of Cushing, John Fishburn of Musen, and Nile C. Kinnie of Omaha.
Shorty Ricker of Ranger Texas former world champion steer wrestler who set a world record at the Sidney rodeo was committed to Clarinda state hospital for insanity by the Fremont county sanity commission. He competed in bulldogging at Wednesday's rodeo program.
Lorna Nichols aged 14 daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Nichols died at home after a brief illness with infantile paralysis in Nichols Muscatine county The death marks the first this year in the county An iron lung had been rushed to Nichols from Muscatine to aid her condition.
Fort Madison announces O. S. Neal, record clerk at the state penitentiary, named acting deputy warden by Warden Glenn C. Haynes. Neal will retain his record clerk duties and temporarily replace Eugene Mahoney who recently left the deputy warden post.
DES MOINES. Two men identified as NL Payne Perry and Dale Busse Brit were fined 25 dollars each by Municipal Judge Ralph Powers for speeding. Police officer Ted Strasberg said both drivers were speeding 46 miles per hour in a zero mile per hour zone. They were taken to municipal court.
Five taxpayers sued Webter County Supervisors J. F. Suli van and F. A. McHaley for excess highway maintenance costs and improper gifts from suppliers. Judge W Dingwell of Adel presided as the hearing halted an attempt to introduce county grand jury records.
Bon Lewis describes five days of troop movements and skirmishes near Selivan Bridge and Pine Center as rain, fatigue, and night marches challenged the soldiers. Captains Brown and three scouts faced enemy fire. two scouts were captured, others reported engagements with machine guns and rifles. One trooper was hospitalized after a horse incident.
State highway engineers finished staking the pavement plan for two blocks of South Second avenue between East Washington and East Jefferson. William Horrabin company of Iowa City secured the contract and will start work next Monday, with an expected duration of one to two weeks. The 84 foot wide concrete pavement will have 20 feet center and seven feet on each side funded by the state and city. The project ties into primary roads No. 1 and No. 2 through Washington after completion.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to expedite the conscription bill as the nation faces defense needs. He noted two months with the bill, and warned that ready equipment from factories this fall will be useless without trained men to operate it. He outlined authority to mobilize the National Guard and organized reserve.
A time adjustment is announced for the funeral of Mrs. Nora Motts Easley who died in Ohio and will be brought to Washington for burial. Services now set for 3 30 Sunday afternoon at L A Jones funeral home replacing the previously scheduled 4 00 Saturday service.
Oskaloosa Iowa August 23 C A Williams Jr announces five members named to the state advisory board for Wendell Willkie campaign. The appointees are Craig St Sheaffer William Yungelas Ira E Lane Alice S Warsaw and Harris Coggeshall. They come from business farming labor womens and youth backgrounds and will donate services with the first meeting set for early next week.
Max Raymond learns police are chasing one clue in the homicide of his mother Maude Raymond whose body was found in her San Diego apartment. Funeral plans are not definite but likely in California. Maude Kephart Raymond, born May 11 1889 in Washington county, longtime resident, survives by three sons Roy Lester Max, a daughter Mrs Irvin Williams, six grandchildren, mother in Winters California, four brothers and three sisters in California. Bernardine is deceased.
Dr. F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church will deliver the Sunday evening sermon at a union service in Central Park at 7 30. The benediction will be the topic and community ministers will participate with brass quartet music from the Municipal band led by John Perdock Max Lee Daryl Fetters and Robert Faulkner.
A twin motored army air force bomber crashed and exploded in a rainstorm near Wat kin s six miles south of the Denver home field. Nine men were killed when the bomber was downed during a night bombing mission. The cause of the crash was not known. Major A L Jewett announced the deaths about an hour after the incident.
Forrest Schirmer was arraigned in district court before Judge J. G. Patterson of Oskaloosa and pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He received a three month sentence in the county jail. Judge Patterson announced routine matters and said he will return Sept 5 for further court in Washington as the March term continues, with the new term opening Sept 9.
Washington 4 H boys placed well in the swine contest at the state fair. Marion Timmins was reserve champion in the carcass on foot class. Cleo McCoy received a blue ribbon and Stanley Chabal a white ribbon in this class. Timmins won two awards.
About 4,000 people attended Wellman’s Thanksgiving Town festival featuring a speaking program, band concert, old fiddlers and amateur contests, plus a morning soapbox derby and pet parade. Winners included Laurel Rice and Lynn Disney in youth divisions, with soapbox finals won by Gene Bash for Maplecrest Turkey Farms.
Awards at the Iowa state fair in Des Moines list 4-H results. Stanley Chabal of Washington county wins a blue ribbon in the fat lamb division along with Raymond Bell and Dean Rinner from Washington county. Cleo McCoy earns two red ribbons in the Duroc Jersey market pig class and blue ribbons in Poland China market pig class.
Rural eighth grade graduates in theWashington area are urged to enroll for high school this fall. Registration days are August 27 28 29 and 30. Open to students from rural schools and those who never attended Washington schools.
Reports from London describe hours of RAF bombing of German gun emplacements between Calais and Boulogne and attacks on 22 German air bases. German air activity was sporadic with incendiaries aimed at British crops. London suburbs were hit by delayed action bombs with light casualties. In Crete crisis talks, British and Italian fleets maneuvered as Italy pressed Greece for a defense guarantee. From Cairo, Italy reported losses near Bomba Libya, with retaliatory strikes on Alexandria and a British convoy in the Mediterranean.

Dr. R. D. Smith longtime Clarinda State Insane Hospital superintendent died reportedly of a heart attack in his apartment at age 59. He joined the staff in 1910 and rose to superintendent in 1933 after serving as assistant superintendent since 1918. He was wounded by an employee in 1940 and survived by his wife two daughters and a son.
