Two three story downtown buildings burned in Fort Madison after the quake. Loss ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars as fires were fought by Fort Madison and outside departments from Iowa Ordnance Plant Burlington and West Point. One building housed an A and P supermarket and pen company equipment while the other housed Home Furniture Company. Fire started at 2 10 a m and fire crews battled for about three hours as hundreds watched.
