Washington recorded 2.04 inches of rain from Wednesday evening into the night. An official weather observer noted about .7 inch fell in a heavy early storm, with the rest spreading until around 4 a.m. today. Overcast skies lingered this morning with a chance of more moisture before the clearing.
An armed robber shot and killed two Downtown Holiday Inn employees in Des Moines Iowa and seriously wounded two others. Police described the slayings as brutal and searched for the suspect who fled in a car outside. The gunman dropped more than 200 dollars in bills as he fled the motel lobby and escaped with 61 dollars.
The Dow Jones industrial average slid to 699.62 on the New York Stock Exchange, below 700 for the first time since 1970, down 11.97 from the opening as it ends a rough ten-session stretch with a rare up day after Rockefeller’s VP nomination. Rep Mezvinsky urges action on major congressional reform to restructure the House committee system, despite a setback when the Rules Committee postponed a vote.
A consulting engineer told the Washington Kiwanis that public cooperation is essential to fix long range sewer deficiencies. John Franklin of Howard R. Green Co. noted past progress, current storm sewer updates, and plans for interceptors, lift stations, and more lines costing about 3 million dollars with possible federal funds.

An eight inch rainstorm fell unofficially at Sanborn in O Brien County.
The House released the 525 page final Judiciary Committee report on Nixon impeachment, asserting he lied and violated laws. It details Article One actions and cites Watergate transcripts Aug 5 as pivotal. Garrison’s dissent notes Nixon impeded FBI probes and CIA involvement.
