Fairfield Iowa Aug 22 Howard Emanuel Fairfield was released on $2000 bond after being charged with manslaughter in the hit and run death of 13 year old James Mercer and two other youths struck while riding bicycles. Des Moines Strike Talks Continue With Settlement Efforts

Harry L. Whittaker 76 died yesterday at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a major operation. He was born July 22 1870 in Brimfield Illinois and moved to Iowa in 1893. He founded a feed yard in Washington and helped start local auctions with family involvement. Funeral services will be at St James Catholic Church with a rosary tonight and a Saturday nine o'clock mass Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 8 30 tonight at the family home. He is survived by his wife five children eleven grandchildren and several siblings with one brother predeceasing him.

Mrs. Guy Ritz a 32 year old Woolson farm woman and mother of ten children died in Farifield Iowa when a kerosene stove exploded as she lit a fire. She saved her seven month old child by tearing off a window screen and wrapping burning clothing in a blanket as the house burned rapidly.
