The Office of Price Administration announced reduced retail meat ceilings will take effect early next month with retail price cuts lagging 12 to 14 days after live stock price reductions. Iowa officials hailed the move as stabilizing meat costs while warning against black market fears.
The Iowa American Legion convention in Des Moines chose Jesse W. Halden 52 of Newton as state commander. Veteran of the first world war. R. J. Laird was re elected adjutant. Paul Fulton of Burlington named one of five vice commanders.
In Des Moines Iowa on Aus 21 up reports state that housewives must use current sugar allotments for canning. OPA officials say grocers and meat dealers urged extra sugar to handle bumper crops of pears peaches and prunes but additional supply cannot be provided. Walter Kline state OPA director warned against efforts to obtain more sugar.
Roger D Holmes of Crawfordsville won market litter champion with ten of four market pigs judged at the county 4-H fair. Jimmy Barnes of Brighton led the individual market pig. Richard Andersen had the reserve litter and pen. Ralph Knotek of Riverside champion of purebred litter. Gerald Howell won showmanship in cattle. Charles Twinam led later events. Multiple awards listed by breed include Duroc Hampshire and Poland China with names such as Gary Augustine Jim Litwiller and Jimmie Barnes among top finishers.
Rosamond and Frances Sojka of the Farmerettes were crowned champion demonstration team at the 4-H achievement event and will perform Pascinating Islander Coverings at the State fair. Reserve champions are Elda Ruth McDowell and Mary Ann Bauer of West Point with A Bright Light Is Right.
A chartered two engine Douglas DC-3 crashed at Moline airport during an attempted emergency landing. Pilot and co-pilot were killed while 24 passengers escaped with ten injuries as wreckage spread over a 10 yard area. The flight had departed New York for San Francisco with Chicago as a prior stop. Trans-Luxury operates non scheduled freight and passenger flights from New York City.
The Grange questions price hikes and doubts OPA enforcement of the slaughter control program. It warns beef cattle may shift into the black market, and an American Farm Bureau Federation spokesman echoes a similar stance though not officially representing the group.
William Henry Harrison rose from county clerk in Ohio to be nominated for the Presidency. The note traces his rise from local government to national leadership as the ninth President of the United States.

Harry Whittaker died at Mercy hospital in Iowa City around 2 pm after nearly a week of illness. He was transported from Washington yesterday and will be moved to Sherman’s funeral home for arrangements. A well known county figure, he conducted community sales on North Marion Avenue and lived in Washington for many years.
Ralph W. Thompson resigns from Washington county collateral inheritance tax appraisal group and requests a successor. Judge Frank Bechly appoints George Gifford Morrison to fill the unexpired term. Morrison is a young Washington attorney. Other members are Lester Harr and C. V. Crull.
George and Agnes Sojka sue for 3500 dollars for farm damage claimed when a railroad cuts across their land near the planned Ainsworth cut off. Theodore B. Bailey represents the plaintiffs in district court.

Iowa housewives can can peaches at home this winter as Zeh notes continued cutbacks in commercial canning. He says the nation’s second largest peach crop will flood Iowa stores, despite reduced commercial processing.

Howard Emanuel of Fairfield Iowa admitted he was at the wheel when a car rammed a group of three boys on Li eyeles killing James Mercer. Police say Emanuel was seen driving the car on the town outskirts and had taken it from hiding to move it after an earlier attempt to transport it. Mercer death marked Jefferson County's first traffic fatality since December 5 1944.
L. D. Dare explained to passers-by in Mt Vernon that his pine trees were bedecked with hollyhock blooms to play a prank and beautify his yard. The display drew amazement from onlookers who described the scene as a joke.
