A University of Iowa column reports graphic and plastic arts head Lester Longman announcing 17 practical new courses for the department this fall. He notes higher standards for advanced degree requirements and emphasizes practicality in the updated curriculum.
Miss Myri Le Wark and Prof. W. F. Bristol of the University of Iowa College of Commerce secured a license to remarry at the Johnson County Courthouse. Justice of the Peace John M. Kadlec performed the ceremony.
J. W. Johnson of Newton explained the policy of better late than never while visiting Des Moines He earned a bachelor of arts degree at Penncollee in Oskaloosa at age 76 Friends doubted the value of education at his age but he would do it again He paused in Des Moines during the visit.
Samuel Whit, 69, of Detroit, was killed near South Amana when his car left the road and went into a ditch while a wife and daughter were injured. The family, on a vacation trip, was traveling with a Wayne county deputy sheriff badge found on Whit. No cause for the accident was learned by Sheriff Engelbert of Marengo.
Des Moines reports show Anamosa reformatory inmate food costs at $5.42 per inmate in July, down from $6.52 in June and $4.35 in May 1934. Total July feeding cost for 1,170 convicts was $6,355, per the state comptroller.
Pecos Texas rider Nsora Deracy set a record by roping and tying a calf in eight seconds, the first time the event was held at Sidney rodeo, capturing the performance that night.
An elevator owned by Kemp & Co. was destroyed by fire of unknown origin in Indianola. Loss estimates ranged from 25,000 pounds to 50,000 dollars. Two people were reported injured in the blaze.

R K Atchison of Rimersboro Pa will conduct services ending with a communion on Sabbath. Services start at 7 45 p m. all are welcome.

Washington lawyers and local friends plan the two oclock Sunday funeral at the Grinnell Congregational Church for Judge D W Hamilton who died in Rochester Minnesota from pneumonia after months of illness. He was born in 1862 near Thornburg Iowa and served as sixth district judge since 1918, with earlier service as a congressman. He leaves ten children and his wife died two years ago.
Washington County Supt Lester B Krabill announced that most rural schools have contracted teachers for the coming year with Oak Grove in Iowa township and Fairview in Lime Creek still seeking staff. Meetings are set for Aug 28 and 29 at the courthouse to equip and brief new and experienced teachers.
Cash premiums are offered for the best grain potatoes and poultry at the Dutch Creek Fair next Thursday and Friday. Chairman Carl W Klein says despite scarce display ears this year Dutch Creek farmers expect a worthwhile 1935 corn showing and prizes will be given for wheat oats potatoes and poultry including champion roosters and hens with premiums listed.
Eight women and four men were arrested as two groups of communists staged a demonstration aboard the North German Lloyd liner Bremen in New York. Passengers were held as banners and chained protesters appeared on the first class deck calling to stop Nazi war moves and oppose intervention in Spain. Departure was delayed while the demonstrators were removed. Max Schmeling embarked for Europe during the disruption.
The murder of five Roman Catholic bishops in Spain by Spanish communists was officially reported to Pope Pius. One bishop, Siquesa, was tarred and burned at the stake. The pope condemned anti clerical excesses. In Madrid, reports also said Franco’s plans for a multi front push were not borne out by today’s developments.
Ralph Stafford of Muscatine will address the Washington County Republican Women's club next Wednesday at 2 30 p m in City Hall. The meeting topic is Why Women Should Vote the Republican Ticket. Stafford, a prominent attorney and son of Rev Charles L Stafford, is noted for his Republican work. program will include music and other numbers. all interested women are invited.
The annual Washington county district court report shows 33 criminal cases in the year ending July 1, nine for drunken driving and eight for larceny. Most liquor offenses involved driving after drinking. two bootlegging arrests and one for a liquor nuisance. Sentences commonly ranged from a few months in jail with suspended terms to parole. Some results include embezzlement, lewd acts, gambling, and illegal license plates. Total county expenses for corrections reached 2055.02 dollars, with county attorney costs at 1500 dollars and other fees totaling 166.73 dollars. Grand jury costs were 2382.40, plus related bailiff, clerk, and juror meal expenses.
Washington schools prepare to start the new year on September 7. Miss Della Patton oversees high school registrations while Dean Harland Mead arranges junior college setup. He toured after a 1500 mile trip through midwest states, praised by Iowa GOP leaders as a leading candidate for November.
