Reduced Yields Hit Washington County Crops Amid Drought
Rain fell in Washington County Thursday night providing limited relief to corn and soybean crops after a prolonged drought. Extension director Jim Frier notes potential 15 percent yield drops from prior estimates, with bigger losses in southern areas due to thin soils and heat stress during pollination. He warns of blight damage and suggests erosion control and blight-resistant varieties for next year, while some farmers harvest silage to salvage what remains.
