Nathaniel Nuno, 13, a Boy Scout from Ghana, went to the London Zoo to view the lions. He joked that he had to see one after many jokes about never having seen a lion before returning to Africa.
Maj. David G. Simons, 35, an Air Force doctor from Lancaster Pa, reached altitudes above 19 miles in a record balloon voyage near Elm Lake, South Dakota. He described the ascent as like riding an endless elevator and said he felt no loneliness despite the long mission.
County Superintendent Lester B arabill announced state reimbursements totaling 5271.82 for excess cost claims in Washington County for 1956 57 special education. The program listed staff Dorothy Patch Edna Blumenstein and Mary Brice plus transportation and supplies. Districts receiving funds included County Board of Education Wellman West Chester Washington Independent Kalona Crawfordsville Keota Highland Township Oregon Township and Snake Hollow with varying amounts. Mid Prairie Reorganized Community plans two to three special rooms at Wellman starting September.

The Iowa Highway Commission will meet with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads and state commissions to study establishing the Iowa section of a 310 mile Mississippi River scenic parkway from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. Freight traffic, billboards, and private development impact the project.
Cedar Rapids Patrolman Marion Reed fatally shot Dorrance McEnany 33 after McEnany fled from a tavern steps scene. Reed fired three warning shots to halt him. one struck McEnany and another hit a Gazette window. Coroner's inquest ordered. McEnany sought for cashing about 12 bad checks totaling about 250 dollars.
YMCA staff finish a thorough cleaning and repair work at Lake Darling. The building will reopen Monday morning under general secretary Jim Anderson. Campers enjoyed free horse rides provided by Bob Martin of Hilltip Ranch. Repairs include floor sanding in the community room and pool cleaning.
The Washington FFA Chapter met in August at the high school to review fair cat stand results. Net proceeds totaled 290.81 after paying 109.38 in bills to Townsley Park Fair Assn. Gifts were awarded this year to Peter Bell for Rotary gifts to the FFA. Members Gaylen Jarrard and Terry Horn received hog project gifts. Dean Weaver placed 6th and 14th in Market Barrow show at Columbus Junction Fair and helped in Cedar Rapids contest. Plans were made to show dogs at the Iowa State Fair in the F A division.
Loveless announced a plan to create a joint program with industry and Iowa State College to expand technical and marketing research facilities for Iowa firms. He envisions an Iowa Foundation of industries to finance and align resources with national needs and aims to meet within two months with ISU officials.
Two public sessions are planned at Washington City Hall this week. The first, at 7 30 p m Thursday, will discuss a proposed long range development plan. The second, at 7 30 p m Friday, will address a proposed new zoning ordinance for Washington.
The House Appropriations Committee cut about 216 million dollars from Atomic Energy Commission funding in the final budget bill of the session. The panel approved 2.27 billion for the AEC for the year starting July 1, down from the President’s request of 2.49 billion, and slashed total administration requests by over 5.4 billion. The committee rejected 30 million for private utility aid and denied all funds for the Power Reactor Development Co., while allowing up to 1.5 million for AEC internal research linked to a Detroit project and continuing several public power reactor projects nationwide.
Fire at 1003 East Third Street Washington caused heavy upstairs damage to the Geyer residence. Grace Geyer and family occupied the home. a granddaughter Delores Allard reported the alarm. Firefighters arrived about 11 am and found extensive upstairs destruction with water and smoke damage downstairs. Police investigated possible yard fires and the blaze's cause. Indications put total damage in the thousands of dollars.
Hubert M. Vorwald, 46, Cresco car repairman, admitted shooting his wife twice with a 16 gauge shotgun as she walked from the garden. He pleaded guilty to assault with intent to murder and was sentenced to 30 years in Fort Madison prison in district court. The crime arose from domestic difficulties after Mrs. Vorwald filed for divorce.

Fire touched off by an explosion destroyed four downtown brick buildings in Minden Iowa as flames swept through a bowling alley post office Red and White grocery and a farm equipment warehouse No injuries were reported Fire Chief Allen Ploen said investigators would be sought from the State Fire Marshal to probe the blaze.
Oneida New York Civil Defense Director Harry J. Erd waited for his HQ telephone to ring as a mock nuclear attack alert sounded. His line had failed, leaving him unaware the alert had been issued.

Friday shows warmth with a few thundershowers and temperatures remaining above normal through Monday. Rain totals expected around a half inch, with regional highs around 82 to 85 and lows 56 to 60.
