MEMPHIS Tennessee Up report Alvin Haynie 42 received a $10 fine after riding a horse downtown while intoxicated. He said he was trying to get his horse home.
A 16 year old in Cedar Rapids Iowa confessed to a $2500 extortion attempt against Marvin Selden VP of Merchants National Bank Officials say letters threatened death and described a ciphered payment plan The youth was arrested in a police trap after Selden followed the scheme for surrendering the money A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Monday
Washington discussions show House and Senate Republicans push for tougher enforcement while Democrats seek Senate passage. Joseph W. Martin Jr. and William F. Knowland say compromises may extend Congress beyond August 31, with Martin noting hope to dine in New England.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson said he would be glad to discuss department affairs with Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey and would meet when REA Administrator David A. Hamilton returns to Washington. Police pursue whether the blood belongs to Billy Earl Martin as 4000 volunteers search the outlying coal town. Dragging was to resume after a fruitless police search.
Maj. David G. Simons, 35, an Air Force doctor, remains aloft after a wind shift northeast of Sisseton to Breckenridge allowing extended testing on a 24 hour stratospheric flight. He reached over 100000 feet earlier and reports clear skies, aurora observations, and occasional catnaps as officials decide when to descend.
Police spotted 22 year old Roger Young breaking into a service station and fired three shots as he fled. He was chased, tracked to a nearby car, and arrested 30 minutes later. Pocket search found a letter from Detroit Police Department ordering his police written examination.
Mrs. E.R. Mitchell former resident of Columbus Junction died suddenly in her Ottumwa home Sunday afternoon. Funeral is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday in Ottumwa. She is survived by her husband the Rev. E. R. Mitchell one son one daughter and several stepchildren.
Police in Levittown clashed with more than 350 demonstrators outside the Meyers home as state troopers charged the crowd to dispersed. Three people injured including Patricia Mulhern and Donald Walker, with Mulhern planning to pursue police brutality charges.
President Eisenhower pressed Republican leaders to back a full scale foreign aid program of 3.367 billion dollars. Senate GOP Leader Knowland said only part of the 800 million cut by the House is likely to be restored. The Appropriations Committee debated a compromise between 2.525 and 3.367 billion, with a House Senate conference to resolve the gaps.
The Washington Municipal Band will perform an all marches program this week. Some pieces were requested by audience members and the band invites listeners to enjoy the themed concert.
Des Moines acting State Safety Commissioner Russell Brown promoted Tillman Thompson to chief of the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation effective Aug 23. Thompson, 48, a 17 year bureau veteran and former Wright County deputy, will reorganize the bureau with a new training program under assistant chief Robert Blair. Blair, 34, FBI veteran, will supervise technical services. both receive annual salaries of 6000 and 5700 respectively.

Robert Ferrell, vocal music director, back from Minnesota, will review voices tomorrow and Thursday in the high school vocal music room. Students with last names A to M should attend 9 a.m. Wednesday. N to Z go at 9 a.m. Thursday.
William King, 33, walked into Hartford police headquarters saying he wanted to see the captain about a job. A steak knife was found in his belt during a desk search and he was booked for carrying a dangerous weapon. He said he carried it for protection at night.
The University of Iowa library director Ralph E. Ellsworth, in his 14th year leading the library, will take a new post as director of libraries and professor at the University of Colorado starting January 1. Ellsworth leaves Iowa City to join Colorado academics.
Washington County Beef Producers plan a two day Nebraska Sand Hills tour in mid September. About 30 to 50 members will ride by chartered bus with a $15 deposit due on reservation. They depart September 15, tour Sand Hills ranches, attend a picnic, and return home Tuesday. Directors listed for reservations include Norman Huston Anderson Huber Stransky Shalla Marek Kleese Stephens.
