Mrs W H Percy of Jonah, a drought hit area seven miles east of Georgetown, struck oil while drilling for water. She laments the drought ruined her vegetation and cannot even run her air conditioner on oil.
Fire destroyed the four story St. Joseph's convent and school in ANTHON Iowa after four Servants of Mary nuns were rescued from the roof and upper floors. Sister Mary Reparata 74 suffered critical burns while Sisters Mary Angeline and Mary Gregory also escaped. Firefighters battled flames that rose from a rear porch and a circular staircase forcing rescue by ladder and window.
In San Francisco the GOP National Convention adopted a 1956 platform pledging peace prosperity and equal rights. The civil rights plank was toned down to support desegregation with all deliberate speed under federal courts and to back Eisenhower's civil rights program.
Former Illinois Auditor Orville E. Hodge arrived at Menard State Prison to start a 12 to 15 year sentence after pleading guilty to embezzling one million dollars from the state treasury. The judge imposed the term, below federal penalties, while Hodge faced diagnostic evaluation to determine final prison assignment.
Sixteen Muscatine firemen resign in protest of Fire Chief Alex Bender's reinstatement by the Civil Service Commission. Acting Chief Ray Woolsey and Assistant Chief Ted Phillips resign among others, effective Sept 16 to avoid endangering citizens and property. Bender had been demoted April 3 for alleged mishandling. four on the force did not resign.
Ed Prins head of Holland Public Schools custodial staff earned a bachelor of arts degree from Hope College after ten years of part time study.
Two trains derailed near Durant when the Rocky Mountain Limited No. 8 jumped its track and struck an oncoming Rock Island mail train. One baggageman was hospitalized in Davenport while crews assessed damage and cause, with both trains upright and engines on tracks.
Leroy Luers, near Wellman, reports a soybean plant with 231 pods and 75 to 80 percent three beans per pod. The field belongs to Mrs Effie Israel and Luers, managed by Lester Ferguson, and the plant is on display at the Journal office.
A large gathering of Young Republicans attended a district meeting at the Epicurean. Governor Arthur Langue presented the keynote to the national Republican Convention via TV. District and county leaders spoke as Washington held the largest delegation with 19 members.
Funeral services for Mrs. Duane Tucker of Davenport formerly of Columbus Junction who died in a car crash near Abingdon Illinois Sunday August 19 will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Dudgeon funeral home Wapello with burial there Survivors include her husband a son Milton a Marine a daughter Sandra her parents Mr and Mrs Heater of Burlington several brothers and sisters and her grandparents Mr and Mrs Heater of Wapello The Tuc kers owned a Columbus Junction bakery for years until November 1955.

Funeral services for Velma Mitchell age 43 were held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. A rosary was said the preceding evening at Crane Funeral Home. Mitchell, born February 12, 1913 in Crawfordsville, died after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her father Fred Mitchell, three brothers and one sister. Burial followed at Crawfordsville Cemetery.
54 new polio cases were reported in Iowa last week per the Iowa Department of Public Health. Most were non paralytic, with six unspecified cases, as Cerro Gordo led counties with 37 cases this year followed by Polk and Black Hawk.
Washington County 4-H livestock will be transported to the state fair in Des Moines by Roy Havel and Sons. The Havels donate their trucks as a courtesy to the 4-H members for the event.
Four Louisa County men aboard a light plane en route from Iowa to New Orleans were hospitalized in St. Louis after a crash in wooded terrain near Cherryville Missouri. Pilot Jefferson M Jennings Jr and three passengers sustained multiple injuries. fog and a hillside crash with two tree tops breaking the fall were cited as factors.
In San Francisco Harry S. Truman and Harold E. Stassen face similar political odds relying on opponents to boost their standing. If Eisenhower Nixon fail to beat Stevenson Kefauver, Truman risks exposure as a prophet. he once questioned Stevenson’s electability but now sees potential help from Truman.
Des Moines reports that a supplementary tax assessment of 2023 dollars against District Judge R. G. Patterson of Oskaloosa was withdrawn by Iowa Tax Commission officials. They said Patterson properly reported his monies and credits, and the extra assessment arose from an under valuation by Mahaska County assessor's office.
