A large crowd watched as the Reliance under Sir Oliver Iselin outpaced Thomas Lipton's Shamrock II in a 15 mile windward leg off Sandy Hook. The sea fought the challengers, but the American defender showed superior reaching and running in varied conditions, signaling a strong hold on yachting supremacy.
IR Thomas Lipton and Shamrock II sailed against a long ground swell with speeds from one to twelve knots. The Shamrock failed to round the outer mark and was reportedly more than a mile behind, about sixteen minutes at wind strength when Reliance rounded.

Beaum ont Texas August 21 Fire destroyed twenty five derricks in the Shoe String district of the Sour Lake oil fields. The blaze began when a man dumped a gallon of crude oil into a boiler fire box to start a fire. It spread rapidly threatening about 180 derricks and several large tanks in the area.
A Wheaton storm on August 21 brought hailstones eight inches in circumference and tea cup sized hail for fifteen minutes. Every house suffered broken windows with the college and public schools heavily damaged.
Frederick Hampel who killed Thomas R. Morgan and later died by his own hand in jail was buried in Riverside cemetery potters field. Mrs. Hampel refused to participate in the burial and the city covered the expenses. There was no funeral service.

Owosso Michigan August 21 Mrs Catherine Kearney of Morrice becomes the first person to occupy a grave in the new Roman Catholic cemetery near Morrice. Her friends and relatives express pride rather than envy at the historic milestone.
In Clinton Wisconsin burglars entered the post office and robbed it of 3800 dollars in cash and 1000 dollars in stamps. The theft occurred on August 21 at Janesville reporting area. Local investigators pursued leads but details remain sparse. Authorities urged citizens to report any suspicious activity connected with the break in.
Albert Heklund alias George Johnson escaped on a Denver coach bound for Chicago after befriending Detective William Marsden. Marsden, guarding the prisoner, was bound to a chair car seat where the fugitive cut the shackles with a stolen key, freed himself and then released the officer. The escape occurred near Laramie after the train stopped at Rawlings.
Newton Hillyard of Clinton was found dead opposite Winona Minnesota identified by letters in his pockets. He had moved from Tipton twelve years ago to Clinton. His wife and children remain, his father died recently leaving property. A brother travels to Winona for the remains. No clue to the killer.
Passenger representatives report that Dowies expedition to New York on October 14 will require moving at least 4 000 people rather than 2 400. Crusaders will come from beyond Chicago and Zion City with special rail fares from western states and nearby territories to major cities between Chicago and New York.
John J. Kelly longtime city court clerk and former union figure in northern Illinois was arraigned before Justice Becker on a charge of operating a blind pig disguised as a club room over a Chicago Street saloon. James Shoders shot bartender Charles Grottis in Ragha s saloon at Keyesport ten miles south of Greenville after a daytime quarrel. Grottis fired at Shoders as he lay prostrate. Shoders fired again and fled, prompting a sheriff’s posse to arrest him amid an ensuing drama.
