Excitement at Camp Lincoln as twenty privates and ten noncommissioned officers face a court martial for French leave and guard breaches. Officials order public reprimands for officers while privates perform police duty. Colonels pledge stricter discipline and reinforced guard tonight.
John Oliver aged 69 from Paxton Mo was struck at the High avenue crossing by a returning freight engine. His left leg was crushed from the heel to the calf and doctors amputated the leg at the knee at the Central hotel. Oliver, an uncle of Rev Latham Ingham Hedrick, faced the injuries bravely and is expected to recover.
Des Moines reports the Iowa department G A R protests passenger association rates for the Philadelphia encampment. The association quotes a single fare for a round trip to Chicago.
Two women Lola Jones and Eeith Gothup accuse Rev. Mont. Greendyke of conduct unbecoming a minister. He faces church arraignment and Indiana conference review with a closed investigation led by Presiding Elder Roberts. Prosecution by Rev. James and defense by Rev. Hobson, amid sensational expectations.
News from Lake End in Natchitoches parish reports a deadly confrontation in B. G. Freeman's store. Callie Brown, Robert Lee Brown, and Dr. W. H. Glover confronted Freeman after an old grudge, with Freeman firing first. All four men died, leaving four dead in the store. Brown and Glover were killed early. Brown was wounded and died at the door after firing at Freeman.
Three African American men brought a shoe box of mutilated currency to the St. Louis sub-treasury claiming it was found in Meramec Highlands near the 1897 Collins robbery scene. Police suspect the bills exceed 5000 dollars and may be the stolen funds. James Martin Ensley was detained briefly but released.
Saturday results include Baltimore sweeping Baltimore 11 to 1, Pittsburg beating Cleveland 11 to 1 in game one and 3 to 1 in game two, Boston defeating Brooklyn 9 to 0, New York defeating Philadelphia 4 to 2, and Chicago losing to Cleveland 8 to 7 with a second game 5 to 0. Western League games show Detroit 15 at Kansas City and Milwaukee 2 over Indianapolis, plus St Paul 11 over Buffalo and Minneapolis 4 over Grand Rapids. Sunday details list Detroit 8 at Kansas City and 3 to 5 in rematch, St Paul 6 over Buffalo 0 and 10 to 0 in reverse, Milwaukee 3 over Indianapolis 8 and 2 to 8 in reverse, and Minneapolis 7 over Grand Rapids 8.
A freight and work train on the St Paul road collided near Iron Mountain Michigan Saturday afternoon. Robert Schwartz of Chilton Wisconsin was killed instantly and Mike Cassiday of Green Bay was badly injured with recovery not expected. Several others were hurt and the money loss exceeds $10000.
In Pinckney Michigan on August 21 Y T Cole of Parsllville found a parchment deed signed by Martin Van Buren as president to Thomas Vantuyl for eighty acres in Oceola township. The document remains clear with each line legible.
A Saturday morning blaze in Sidney Nebraska destroyed an entire block including three business houses six residences and several barns. The fire left at least forty thousand dollars in damages with no insurance and forced residents to flee with only what they could carry.
The Baltimore and Ohio road will carry free all supplies of food and clothing for hurricane survivors in Porto Rico from all points on the line to committees in Baltimore and Philadelphia. The note also mentions collections of Internal Revenue and a July 1899 revenue report showing a total of 28,912,287 with a net increase of 20,802 compared to July 1898.
Paris saw a renewed surge of anarchist protest with mobs smashing windows of churches including St Ambroise and looting religious interiors. Faure and D’Horr led clashes with police. 20 anarchists arrested as fear and confusion spread across Place de la Republique and Place de la Nation.
A mob at Fau bourg du Temple near Rue Darboy and Rue St Mauri Papincourt forced entry into St Joseph church, smashed altars and statues, burned chairs, and toppled the crucifix as police and Republican Guards arrived to defend against knife attacks.
In Pittsburg on Aug 21 the Post reports a forthcoming clash as building trades join window glass workers to oppose a manufacturers trust. Independent co op factories will supply glass used in buildings, signaling a broad labor alliance against concentrated capital. M P Carrick says painters may join the effort, taking the lead against trusts.
Sheriff Ferguson suspects a local thug fled to Chicago after a man was found dead in the Paw Paw river. Bridgetender Lysatt recalls a midnight sight of the suspect with a stranger and a distress cry later. Chicago police are sought. detective De Sousa assists without success.
In Traverse City Michigan on August 21 Har old Hobart a seven year old of Cincinnati and his uncle W W Hobart aged twenty three drowned at May Neahtawanta resort after cramping during a swim. E W Hobart assisted the boy and both bodies were recovered.
At Chicago session of the National Afro American council the spotlight fell on Booker T. Washington for not attending. Mrs. Washington withdrew from a country grievances address, provoking debates about leadership and race. Du Bois urged restraint as McKinley supporters failed to derail the slate, electing Bishop Alexander Walters as president and naming officers.
Kansas City dispatch reports a convention adopting resolutions denouncing mob violence and lynching, urging federal legislation to protect citizens’ life and property, condemning anti black labor hostility, and calling for labor unity while criticizing presidential inaction. The note adds a rail wreck near Texarkana with no injuries.
