Waterloo Soldier Killed in Auto Crash Near Waverly
Pte. Wesley W. Briner 20, of Waterloo, died early Sunday when a car carrying Melvin Fisher of Plainfield crashed into a bridge end ten miles north of Waverly. Fisher was injured and released from hospital. Briner had served in Germany and returned to the U S on furlough from O'Reilly General Hospital Springfield Missouri.

700 Bettendorf workers to be laid off at Harvester plant
Approximately 700 workers at the Inter National Harvester Co. Bettendorf plant will be laid off immediately after government contracts totaling 40 million dollars were cancelled. John N. Jones, 48, died when his car collided with an east bound Rock Island streamliner at a road crossing in Knoxville. Investigating officers cited poor visibility from fog as a contributing factor in the fatal crash.

Boy of Eight Drowns at Lecorah
Orville Gunhuus eight son of Mr and Mrs Ted Gunhuus Cresco drowned Sunday evening after slipping from the Main street dam into the Upper Iowa river. The family had attended the Winnebago county fair and were visiting friends and planned to return to Cresco. His body had not been recovered by night.

Drowning of Waterloo Fisherman William Baker Investigated
High water at Cedar River delayed body search on Sunday after a fisherman drowned when his boat capsized Saturday. The missing man is believed to be 33 year old William Baker, formerly of Ollie and Brighton Iowa and Moline Illinois. Firemen recovered the boat and oars. Lynn Cuffel of Waterloo identified them as Bakers. A Baker car was found in the business district.

Mother of Thomas R. Gillespie Dies
Mrs. Lillias R. Gillespie died this morning at the Mt. Pleasant home of her son Paul Gillespie. She leaves two sons, Thomas R. Gillespie of Washington and Paul Gillespie. The body was taken to A. Jones funeral home for burial arrangements this afternoon.

Riverside man arraigned on operating vehicle while intoxicated
Otto Vochoska of Riverside was arraigned before Justice of the Peace J. B. Bovee on operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was ordered held to the stand jury under bonds of 500 dollars and expected to furnish bonds this afternoon for release. Vochoska was arrested yesterday after his car was involved in side swipe accidents with two other cars. no injuries were reported.

MacArthur vows forceful landing to back up Japan surrender
In Manila August 20 United Press General Douglas MacArthur told Japanese envoys he would lead an American occupation army into Japan within 10 days fully equipped to back the landing by force if necessary.
