Red Oak resident William Irwin Ogden, 60, a farmer, died of a heart attack on his farm. He collapsed while taking a tractor to his son in the field and urged his son to care for his mother and sister.
District Judge T A Beard grants Lloyd T Allison divorce from Pauline Allison charging cruelty and gives custody of the unborn child to Mrs Allison. Allison agrees to pay all reasonable hospital and doctor bills related to the birth and $10 monthly support.
A tree surgeon at an oil station site uncovered an old fashioned bit embedded near the heart of a soft maple. The tool, resembling a hitch rein, is believed to be at least 60 years old.
Iowa City obituary notes Frank Sook, 868, a watchman who spent 42 years guarding local businesses. He reportedly walked about 218,400 miles, an eight‑time-around-the-globe distance, during his service.
Des Moines bureau chief L M Chipman is replaced by L M Chipman who becomes agent in charge of the FBI office in Des Moines. The move comes from director J Edgar Hoover with Chipman and Coulter among seven top G men reassigned to special duty.
Albert P. Jemison of Montrose reports a climate ideal for tobacco on about one third of an acre. He has produced three years of high quality crop with leaves up to a yard long and two feet wide, stalks about four feet tall, blooming honey suckle shaped pink flowers before ripening. He plans another third acre for personal use this year.
After a three year trial the Polk County Medical Society plans to expand its medico dental bureau serving low income groups. Started in spring 1935 the bureau aims to provide medical service when needed at affordable prices. Charity cases are not accepted. eligibility requires a steady but low income.
Keokuk children dream of becoming firemen and will take part in a fire truck derby during Fire Prevention Week starting October 9. All entries must be painted bright red and bear the initials K F D and be home made at a cost not to exceed five dollars.
In 1938 Fatherville Iowa reports the state highway toll reaching 240 after the death of Emery Garman aged 71 of Detroit Michigan from injuries in an automobile accident. His wife Evelyn 50 is in critical condition while their chauffeur James Woodman 36 was released from the hospital.
Cedar Rapids report says Mrs E H Wood of Mechantsville is expected to leave St Luke's hospital within two days after head lacerations from an attack by her husband with a hammer were not as serious as first believed.
Iowa tavern operators race to settle the federal tax of 25 dollars tied to illegal liquor sales as stamps expire July 1. About 165 state stores and over 1,100 residents hold stamps. the tax receipt stance sparks debate on enforcement and federal role in Iowa’s liquor laws. Senator Clyde L. Herring says the tax is a revenue measure, not an enforcement tool.
Lester Graf was severely injured when his car left an east of Brighton highway yesterday about 2 30 pm. He suffered facial trauma including a fractured upper jaw, missing tooth and deeply cut lip. He is hospitalized in Washington county hospital with chest soreness and facial swelling.
Howard Hughes and three crew completed a 10 hour 35 minute non stop flight in an eight ton transport plane from Glendale to New York. They reached 17 000 feet on average though plans called for 25 000. The trip tested a new oxygen mask by Dr Richard Lovelace, praised by Hughes as a radical improvement for pilots and air crews.

Des Moines reports two men loading a machine gun into a tan Chevrolet with Illinois plates two miles east of Council Bluffs at 8 20 this morning. Sheriff Perry ordered a manhunt and state patrols warned to proceed with caution along No. 5.
The Washington Municipal band under Milo Sorden is scheduled for three performances at the Iowa state fair. On Monday August 29 they play from ten to eleven in the plaza Stand and five to six at the plaza. A Tuesday morning concert runs from nine to ten at the same plaza Stand. The band has a strong season and recent town engagements drew large crowds.
Almon Dewey son of Judge Charles A. Dewey is in a Grinnell hospital with concussion shock and cuts after his car wrecked at a bridge near Brooklyn Iowa. Authorities believe he fell asleep at the wheel. He was raised in Washington and was visiting local friends from Des Moines.
A weather forecast promises somewhat cooler temperatures after a heat wave. Today’s high reached 94 degrees with a cool night around 70 and the coming Sunday expected milder conditions.
Dr. C A Boice addressed the Phalanx club on the nationwide campaign against syphilis during a dinner at the North Side restaurant. Washington's 113th Cavalry troops under Lieutenants Conner and Donaldson depart tonight for Camp Dodge for a two week camp. Captain Brown orders Troop F to assemble at eight and depart from Rock Island station on a special train shortly after midnight. The unit will meet at Oskaloosa to join the machine gun troop and arrive early Sunday morning. Eight men remain with Captain Brown for pre camp work, while Lieut. Conner and twenty men arrive from Newton. Local unease grows over martial law ending as Maytag workers resume payday and anticipate a tense Monday back at work with soldiers absent.
Germany arrests Capt. Thomas Kendrick on espionage charges and expels him, claiming he worked as a British spy in Vienna for 13 years. Berlin says the case shows a serious breach and German press pumps up a complete confession as reporters are summoned.
Captain Thomas Kendrick was arrested by Nazi authorities and left Vienna this afternoon bound for England, signaling a tense cross border confrontation during the war.
London reports the British government deem it extremely unlikely Captain Kendrick arrested in Vienna as a spy is involved in espionage. No German evidence or details have been received. A formal statement will be issued after a full report is obtained.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion reports strong local interest in the Labor Day program at Kendrix field, three miles southwest of town. The lineup features a tin can derby with old model car races, horse and mule races, a pulling contest, bicycle race, creased pig, and more under chairmen Maynard Brown and Carl Voorhees. The evening includes a Washington fire department water fight and a Legion dance downtown.
