A heifer calf owned by James Cooper of Hancock County emerges as a top contender in livestock circuits after winning third in open class at the North Iowa fairgrounds in Mason City. The calf was born to Cooper's two year old cow, highlighting prenatal influence theories in the column.
Charges of illegal possession and transportation of liquor were filed in municipal court against Carl Ferber a Sioux City resident who runs the Ace Liquor Store in Sioux City Nebraska. Ferber was found with whisky in his car on the Iowa side of the bridge between the two cities.
Journal indicates Justice of the Peace Henry L. Suckow of Ell township was bound over to the Hancock county grand jury on embezzlement charges. Sheriff L. M. Brower reported the information, with the hearing before Justice of Peace John Ford of Garner.

Elmer E Crayne 77 died this morning about 9 30 after a fall two months ago that fractured his hip and led to illness He will be buried in the family lot at Keota beside his parents The funeral will be at Marsh funeral home in Keota likely at ten oclock He was born near West Chester June 11 1861 to J B and Ann Walton Crayne He is survived by son Maurice Crayne of Iowa City and siblings Mrs Frank McFarlane Washington Mrs Cora Kerchner Keota Hugh Crayne Oskaloosa Mrs J G Arnold Chinook Montana Mrs Lizzie Gallagher Los Angeles Calif and Mrs George Horsley Nakusp British Columbia
We report in Wayland on August 19 that a barn owned by Pete Widmer was destroyed by fire yesterday morning at about 10 30. The Widmer property lies in the northwest part of Wayland. Fire is believed to have started by spontaneous combustion. A bucket brigade formed to guard a six room bungalow from sparks but the barn and its contents were a total loss.
Martial law ended in Newton after a month as civil authority returned to District Court Judge Bechly. Indictments against CIO members remain, with a wage cut in effect for 1,400 workers and the Maytag plant reopening under troop protection. Maytag payroll totaled about $60,000 as union leaders weighed actions.
State highway engineers have completed surveys and grades for the North Second avenue underpass but the contractor has not started any actual construction.
