Five people were arrested in Des Moines and the Quad-Cities after an undercover agent bought an M 3 submachine gun for 260 from Manuel Carrillo 27. Others named include Terry Cade 27 Garry Kinsley 34 Dennis McChurch 26 and Stanely Andon 39. Explosives found but no charges. Charges relate to transferring a firearm and incidents may rise.

Police Tackle Londonderry Barricades Amid Fresh Clashes
British troops tore down Roman Catholic area barricades in Londonderry for a second time in hours. Militants clashed with soldiers earlier and again during the day, raising the death toll to at least 28 since August 9. An army spokesman said half a dozen barricades were cleared in 90 minutes without further gun battles. Witnesses said Catholics rebuilt barriers using concrete and debris after paratroops moved in. Two Opposition MPs, John Hume and Ivan Cooper, were released on bail as clashes continued near Bogside. Prime Minister Faulkner met Edward Heath in London to review internment measures.

Van Nostrand fires Iowa utilities chief over alleged inefficiency
Des Moines United Press International reports that Maurice Van Nostrand dismissed Thomas Bolton, chief of the Iowa Commerce Commission utilities division, for inefficiency and failure to perform duties. Bolton received a 45 minute notice with firing set for 4:30 Wednesday after discussions the night before. Bolton plans no immediate appeal. Van Nostrand seeks Bolton’s replacement from within or outside Iowa. The firing follows resignations and investigations rocking the commission, with looming rate cases and a heavy workload ahead.
