Australians repulse Viet Cong assault in Mekong Delta battle

In monsoon rain near Vung Tau Australian troops from the 16th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment repelled a Viet Cong ambush on a rubber plantation. Reinforcements via armored vehicular support and US airpower broke the siege, leaving VC with heavy losses. US pilots claimed MIG engagements near Hanoi with multiple shoot downs as air campaigns continued.

Johnson cites progress in the Great Lakes pollution battle in upstate tour

President Johnson marked day 1,000 as chief executive with a five state three day campaign starting in Niagara Square Buffalo. Iowans find way back from forest

Dr Frank Littell 49 president of Iowa Wesleyan College and his 15 year old son Steven emerged from the Mission Mountain wilderness near PLSON Montana after being missing since Tuesday while fishing near Cedar Lake on the east slope of the Mission Range. They had separated from a party of five fishermen and walked out at 8 30 a m as ground search teams prepared to enter the area.

Survives Delicate Heart Operation Woman Walks After Pump Removal

Mrs Yperanza del Valle Vasquez of Mexico City, 11, underwent a delicate heart operation and removing a supplementary pump. She walked with assistance to a chair for about 20 minutes, visiting nurses and doctors at Methodist Hospital. She remained cheerful, alert, and slept well after the procedure.

Seek man and girl held as hostage in Massachusetts

In Winchendon Massachusetts police with bloodhounds and a helicopter hunted for Steven H Caouette 19 and his 13 year old former girlfriend Marie Couture after he allegedly abducted her from the Couture home. The wooded area near Benjamin Hill was searched as authorities warned the suspect is armed and dangerous.

Youth Escapes After Car Overturns On Wayland Road

A 20 year old Mt. Pleasant youth, Paul Stafford, escaped serious injury when his car left the road and overturned in a ditch on Wayland road about 4.42 miles from Washington. Stafford was thrown from the convertible, then helped back to the highway and taken to Washington County Hospital with non serious injuries. Charges of possession of beer as a minor and failure to have a vehicle under control are pending.

The House Committee on Un-American Activities wrapped up a stormy session marked by arrests and outbursts as witnesses and spectators clashed over antiwar groups. Navy radar man earns commendation for saving boy

Radarman First Class Simerman, former Washington resident, received the Navy Commendation Medal for lifesaving actions after a four-year-old boy was hit by a truck in Norfolk Virginia on November 24 1965. He stopped, found the unconscious child and performed mouth to mouth resuscitation for about ten minutes until respiration and pulse returned.

Suicide in Ottumwa jail ends young inmate life

In Ottumwa Iowa 16 year old Patricia Ann Malone was found dead in her Wapello County Jail cell. Sheriff Russell Waters said she hanged herself with a strip torn from a blanket at about 825 p m after a welfare worker reported her despair since her mother’s December death.
