New York report states Joseph Michaeloric a Hempstead Long Island substitute letter carrier admitted on Wednesday he set a shoebox full of mail adrift while stopping for a swim during rounds. The shoebox with letters washed ashore 15 miles away and would have required climbing stairs to deliver.
Kalona schools announce a complete teaching staff for the 1954 55 term starting Monday August 30. The roster includes Arthur V. Perry as superintendent and science math teacher, Isabelle Plum as high school principal, plus coaches, elementaries and a kindergarten team, with two kindergarten teachers due to large enrollment and morning and afternoon class sessions. The hot lunch program will be overseen by Mrs. Donald Smith and assistant Mrs. Lyle Fry.
Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Pearl W McMurry commended eight motorists for highway courtesy, aiding victims at accident scenes, and reporting violators. Allen Casady of Plainfield helped three people trapped in a gas tanker cab on US 218 July 17. Winton Chumbley of Indianola and Harry L McNeil of Agency cited for good driving and avoiding crashes. Gene A Dubois of Washburn and John L Morton of Iowa Falls assisted patrols. M G Sawyer of Indianola, Leonard C Thom of Dunkerton, and Ivan Erixson of Des Moines praised for filing information on violators.
The Defense Department accuses the Chinese Communists of holding 15 U.S. Air Force pilots as political prisoners in violation of international law and the Korean armistice. The fliers, captured in the Korean War, allegedly flew over neutral territory and were shot down or forced to land on Red China soil. Geneva talks reportedly acknowledged the imprisonment, with POWs confirming the claim and noting the men may be used as leverage for Red China’s UN admission.

He blamed Secretary Dulles for Danish butter purchases bound for the Far East and praised Gen. Mark Clark for criticizing the United Nations.
Des Moines Iowa Judge Dring D Needham ruled that retired teachers with 50 years service may draw up to 37.50 monthly pension, reversing an Employment Security Commission decision. The ruling clarifies prior law, noting legislative confusion over 1947 and 1953 pension statutes.
Congress overwhelmingly backs a bill cracking down on Communist Party rights and activities. The Senate approves 79 to 0 and the House passes 265 to 2 in a swift show of bipartisanship.
Supt M Robert Everetts announced the book rental plan for the coming term in Washington public schools with minor changes. Students must bring rental fees on August 31. Elementary and junior high fees range from 0.50 to 2.15 for book rental plus locker and industrial arts charges. High school students may buy books at Nicola & Harmon though most text books are rental. Some courses are provided on a rental basis and should not be purchased.
New York report details a vaccine effectiveness test by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Blood from 40 000 children across 44 states will be tested before and after inoculation and over months to measure polio antibodies.
A 280mm Giant Atomic Cannon left the road and rolled into a 12 foot ditch 55 miles south of Munich. Three or four soldiers were injured. Army sources say details are not yet available. The incident involved the 85 ton mobile cannon hauled by twin trucks.
Seventeen farmers and landowners protested at an Iowa Commerce Commission hearing over Northern Natural Gas Co plan to store gas in a 9000 acre underground area near Redfield. They fear land productivity water contamination and shortages. Four geologists and engineers testified gas storage would not affect farm water supplies.
Conferees from the House and Senate reach unani mous agreement on language to satisfy legal objections to the bill aiming to strip Communists of rights. The measure would deny certain rights such as federal employment and public office but stop short of criminalizing party membership. Washington public schools announce tuition rates by Supt. M. Robert Everetts. Rates rise slightly but stay under state maximums. Elementary $23.06 monthly, junior high $31.78, high school $48.56. State maximums: high school $49.50, junior high $42.50, grade school $28.30.
The Washing ton independent school district approved a budget for the coming year asking $277,686.04 from taxation, about $5,500 less than last year, a decrease of about 1 mill. The cut reflects higher tuition and no need to raise funds for high school equipment this year, while a 22 mill school house levy remains included. The district’s total last year taxable valuation was $5,460,849.
Mrs. Fred Cutkamp aged 70 and lifelong Columbus Junction resident died suddenly at her farm home near Columbus Junction at 7 30 this morning. Cause given as heart attack by Dr J W Pence coroner. She was born November 1 1885 near Columbus Junction and survived by her husband and one brother Jeff Cassabaum of Columbus Junction.

The YMCA invites all grade school boys to a fishing trip to the Washington reservoir Friday afternoon. Participants must bring their own tackle and bait and depart from the YMCA at 1 30 p.m.

Charles Gioe known as Cherry Nose, a Capone era extortionist and Chicago kingpin, was shot seven times while seated in a parked car near Angelo's Restaurant on the Near West Side. Police suspect gangland assassins tied to Capone syndicate factions. one eyewitness reported the killing.
