Mrs Return C Hayes phoned the Chip Patrol from Kansas City Kansas Tuesday saying she had changed her mind about a Euro trip with her husband and now wanted to accompany him. The Highway Patrol pledged cooperation.
Premier Pierre Mendes France arrives in Brussels to push a modified European defense plan amid opposition from West Germany Italy Belgium and Holland. The United States warns rejection could force a rethink of its European policy while Britain urges further revision before the EDC conference opens.
Torrential rain overflowed Mill Creek flooding a mile square southwest of Clinton. About 22 inches fell in two hours and 3.06 inches in 24 hours. Twenty homes flooded or surrounded by water. some families evacuated by boat. Flooding damaged basements, crops, and regional lines were washed out.
Wallaces' Farmer and Iowa Homestead poll shows 87 percent of Iowa rural residents favor the United States staying in the United Nations and 79 percent deem the UN important for world peace. Only 11 percent call the UN not important.
The Senate confirmed Herbert Hoover Jr. as under secretary of state by unanimous consent within about thirty minutes of convening. He succeeds Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, who resigns to join private business in the fall. Hoover, 51, has been Secretary of State John Foster Dulles' special consultant on the Anglo Trans- Arab oil dispute.
Volunteer workers in Washington County press the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Polio Foundation drive with Mrs. Wylie Anderson chairing the campaign. The Kenny Foundation supports victims at the Kenny Institute in Minneapolis and Raymond Blank Memorial Hospital in Des Moines, which treated 405 acute cases and 1,095 out-patient visits in 1952, with many patients in 1953 as well.
Catholic gathering draws anticipated 15 000 at University of Iowa fieldhouse for the eighth annual Holy Name Rally on Sunday September 5. Rosary procession address and Benediction highlight the program with prayers for world peace and the conversion of Russia. Directed by Msgr J D Conway with Rev Joseph P Hines coordinating the Holy Name Society efforts.
State Senator Charles S. Van Eaton of Sioux City said he will sponsor a 1955 Iowa Legislature bill to create an Iowa Toll Road Authority with a $100,000 appropriation. The funds would be repaid to the state from turnpike income, and the plan aims to launch the bill as the session's first measure. The Iowa Highway Commission notes an east-west toll road may be feasible in 1959 if 3.5 percent bonds can be sold.
Mrs Hannah Hartshaw R N of Sigourney starts an eight week field experi ence at the Washington county health unit on August 16 observing and joining the program led by Ethel Gregg R N Washington county public health nurse. She is Muhlenberg hospital trained with Columbia university study, previously nursing in Ecuador and serving as Sigourney Hospital administrator before its closure. She will take up duties as Keokuk county public health nurse on October 11.
Delegates from 161 faiths at the World Council of Churches in Evanston discussed the theme Christ, the Hope of the World. Talks showed deep divisions over whether hope lies in this world or the hereafter, with voices from Europe Africa and Hungary urging varied perspectives and the theme evolving to Christ, the Only Hope of the World.
Washington high school holds its annual orientation for freshmen and transfer students with welcome remarks by Principal Carl Paetz Jr. and a student council led program. Speakers cover fire drills study halls grades lunch program and extracurricular procedures before a school tour.
County superintendent Lester B. Krabill says only one rural teacher remains to be hired for the 1954 55 term. He reports fifty rural teachers are needed in the county and a complete list will be published in the Evening Journal within a few days.
NEA representatives gathered in Washington Court House Tuesday to discuss membership and services. Joe Gettys of Oskaloosa led district delegates from southeast Iowa as they aimed to raise teacher members from 11 000 toward a 14 000 goal this year. Other delegates included Etta Cosner Davenport Ed Sage Keokuk Esther Farrow Sigourney Louise Messer Fairfield Opal Callen Centerville Ken Johnson and Lester Krabill.
The weekly golf stag will be held at the Country Club Friday evening with golf at five and dinner in the clubhouse at 7 30 p m. Warren Stewart will preside in the kitchen in Virginia Melgarri’s absence and a fish fry will be served. Reservations with Frank Melgarri at No 45 by Friday morning.
Sen Joseph R McCarthy will not personally cross examine witnesses in the Senate censure hearings his attorney Edward Bennett Williams said he will conduct the hearings and ask the questions Chadwick new counsel for the committee said his past praise of Gen George C Marshall does not impede his role and McCarthy's personal attorney rejected a $10000 Senate fee for representation before the special censure panel
Des Moines Iowa highway patrolmen using unmarked cars report higher arrest and contact rates than week one. Patrol Chief David Herrick notes averages of 12 moving traffic arrests and 23 driver contacts per week, with most arrests for improper passing and failing to stop.
A United Press survey shows five major Iowa cities raise about $500000 yearly from parking meters. Yet with about 6000 meters the downtown district has space for only roughly 20879 cars and meters funds go to off-street parking as required by state law. Burlington leads in free city lots and low space per car, while others report few or no free lots downtown. Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Dubuque continue to face overflow and congestion.
Washington’s official weather observer reports .85 of an inch of rainfall this week in the district. Showers Monday and Tuesday nights and again early this morning boosted moisture, nearly assuring the success of the 1954 corn crop.
Korean National Assembly met in extraordinary session amid reports of a secret U S withdrawal plan. Korean sources said lawmakers would oppose any US pullout from the peninsula. President Rhee reportedly briefed the assembly chair on American talks and said the plan was being discussed in Washington.
Washington reports the Army has no knowledge of an imminent withdrawal of U S divisions from South Korea. Defense officials say a policy statement on future troop strength may follow. Currently five Army and one Marine divisions serve in Korea, with one Army and one Marine division in Japan. Two National Guard divisions were withdrawn from Korea this spring.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Fajman formerly of Cicero have moved to Washington. He begins work as a salesman for Mulacs Appliance store and has bought a home in southeast Washington. He led a band in Chicago and previously worked as a Wurlitzer Music salesman. He is Mrs Mulacs brother.
Keota FFA members plan a field day on Monday August 23 at 1 pm on the Howard Greiner farm plot three miles east and two miles north of Keota. The event will display three year results of commercial fertilizers including plow down and side dressing at planting, with anhydrous ammonia and aldrin for root worm control. Public invited to view the test plantings.
John Buse 28 of East Dubuque was beaten to death in a night club fight at Club Esquire. Five men Cyril Byrne 18 and the Dodds brothers Gerald 19 James 27 Paul 32 Donald 18 were taken for questioning. Buse died at a Dubuque hospital after the assault. four men reportedly fled as a police car arrived.
Senate investigator Langer accuses GOP leaders of blocking funds for an in depth probe of the Dixon Yates contract involving the Atomic Energy Commission and TVA. Mitchell charges President Eisenhower helped push the private power syndicate, naming Bobby Jones as a director. Eisenhower defends the process, offers records for review, but ABC and Budget Bureau say they cannot assemble them this week. Mitchell demands answers on origin, bidders, disclosures, and why records stay sealed for days.
DES MOINES Iowa E Howard Hill president of the Iowa Farm Bureau praised the farm program just passed by Congress calling it definite progress. He noted the final results differ from any one party yet the legislation includes provisions important to farmers and price support programs aiming for higher and more stable incomes.
British troops began withdrawal from the Suez Canal zone, playing Auld Lang Syne as 850 Marines sailed to Malta. The move starts the departure of 80,000 servicemen guarding the canal and signals the end of 82 years of British occupation.
Adlai Stevenson assailed President Eisenhower for placing party expediency above national interest. Speaking at Democratic Day at the State Fair with Sen. Douglas, Stevenson criticized Meek for echoing White House rhetoric and opposing social security, farm price supports, collective bargaining, and foreign aid. He warned that November's vote would define democracy's direction.
Washington shows 54 hospital beds per 108 residents versus a national average of one bed per 284. Federal institutions excluded. Washington County Hospital cared for 1 198 patients last year with 54 beds adequate for locals and nearby areas. Hospital use rose in 1958 as more births occurred in hospitals and admissions increased.
