Severe electrical and wind storms swept Iowa with heavy rains. Winds reached 65 mph near Ottumwa and Sigourney, communications failed there. Clinton saw 2.22 inches of rain as the Mississippi rose four inches. Lightning struck homes in several counties and power lines were down near Indianola. Highs near 96 in multiple towns and lows around 59 in Spencer.

Dr. W. S. Kyle, county coroner, investigated the sudden death of P. A. Meyers 70, of Keota, at the county hospital after being brought in from Keota the previous Thursday. Meyers was found near the bath area after appearing well earlier. suspected heart attack en route to the bathroom. Funeral arrangements are handled by Marsh Funeral Home in Kesta. two brothers survive, Charles of Mason City and Roy of Los Angeles.

Lester Raymond Injured in Bloomfield Auto Race
Lester Raymond, racing in the final at Bloomfield, crashed after his car breached a fence. A 2x4 penetrated the car, injuring Raymond, who suffered a fractured left leg and other injuries. He was taken to Washington County Hospital. he works at Sewart & Crone garage.

Stutsman Turkey Plant to Start Operations in Weeks
Don Stutsman announces Washingtons Corn Belt Turkey Farms will begin operations within three weeks at a $150,000 plant south of the Rock Island freight base. The facility will process 200,000 to 300,000 turkeys between now and year end, with output absorbed by a Chicago firm for eastern markets. The plant, with modern equipment, seeks about forty workers and plans incubation expansion next spring.

Extortion Plot Targeted Henss Family in Iowa Town
In Crawfordsville on August 17 authorities disclosed a ransom extortion attempt against A D Henss, a locse hardware dealer. A four month old daughter Lynd Jo was threatened in a 337 word note mailed from Washington Iowa. Police and the FBI investigated with no arrests.

Fined for Failure to Report Auto Accident
Everette Smith 18 of Boone was fined $25 and costs by Justice of the Peace George Johnson after being charged with failing to report an accident and allowing a passenger to ride on the outside of a car. Laverne Long 14 of Madrid suffered a brain concussion and remained unconscious more than 24 hours in the incident near the Ledges state park south of Boone.

Wind Storm Damages Iowa Utilities Lines and Crops
Last night’s wind storm damaged lines of the Iowa Southern Utilities and the Iowa Continental Telephone company. Rural lines suffered most as limbs fell on lines and several towns Brighton Wellman and surrounding country experienced outages though repairs were expected by night. Rainfall totaled .70 of an inch bringing monthly precipitation to about five inches. Some corn fields were flattened while others remained largely untouched and the overall crop impact was not seen as serious.

Maxwell Hosts DeMolays at Chicken Fry

Whiskey seized in Davenport is destroyed and hospital given case
Judge Frank Beehly ordered one case of whiskey destroyed and another given to the county hospital. Sheriff H M Putnam seized the liquor last winter as it was illegally transported by Donald E. 4-H Show Opens Monday with Farm Exhibits and Livestock
Leo Sturgeon county extension director announced the county 4-H fair will open Monday at the armory. A large tent to shelter girl 4-H club exhibits will be set up, livestock stalls readied, and weighing for baby beef calves begins at Turkington yards at 7 am. Entries include 48 baby beeves, four purebred beef heifers, 16 dairy heifers, 14 purebred pig litters, 16 market pig litters, 12 colts and one lamb. Judging starts 1 pm Monday for dairy heifers then baby beeves, hogs judged Tuesday at 8 am followed by colts. A greased pig contest is also planned.

Rent Controls Sought for All 99 Iowa Counties
The Towa district OPA labor advisory committee asks National OPA Administrator Paul Porter to apply rent controls statewide. Seventeen counties currently have limits, with a nine point plan urging residential controls for the whole state and extendable commercial rate caps for small businesses. Iowans Die in Highway Crashes Across State
Six Iowans died in yesterday’s highway accidents as the 1916 town traffic toll rose to 808. A pickup struck a Chicago Northwestern passenger train near Danbury killing three women returning from corn picking, Mrs. Jay Sanders and her daughter Mrs. Marie York of Mapleton, and Mrs. Clifford York of Mapleton. Mrs. W. P. Strain died later from injuries sustained in a four mile east collision at Iowa City hospital, while another two fatalities occurred in an auto motorcycle crash near Ottumwa, Letha Mesihinney of Knoxville Missouri and Lawrence McCarthy of Batavia.
