The Cedar Falls 60 piece band travels to Chicago for its third Chicago land music festival appearance. The group placed first in Class A in 1930 and 1934, and will compete Saturday with fifty residents accompanying the band.
Frank Olbers, 18, Otley, was injured when a jug of water fell on him at Walter Nealy's farm near Otley. The impact struck him in the mouth, nearly knocking out eight teeth.
Thomas J. Lancey and Elizabeth Lancey sue William E. Utecht and Lydia E. Utecht in district court claiming the two story brick Utecht drug store encroaches four inches on the Lancey rear property.
Des Moines Adjutant General Charles Grahl and Mrs Grahl welcome Roosevelt grandchildren Sistie and Buzzie and their father Curtiss M Dall. The party will visit the Grahl home at Camp Dodge in Des Moines.
Three Iowa farmers John H. Turner Jr DeWitt Lawrence Beck and Lyle George pleaded not guilty at arraignment on conspiracy to defraud the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. Bond set at 2500 each. Defendants are from DeWitt Low Moor and related trucking work.
DES MOINES Violence marked the state fairgrounds picketing as Fred Stahl a boss carpenter attempting to pass the line was struck in the left eye with his glasses on and his face and eye lacerated by breaking glass Stahl demanded the arrest of two picketers taken to police headquarters.
Grundy Center firemen report acid damage to hoses replacing old lines at a cost of 450 dollars. A year earlier 250 feet of hose were also destroyed in a similar incident. Police appeal for information and urge vigilance.
The Ottumwa board of education voted four to three against restoring the remaining half of a 12 percent pay cut for local teachers from the 1983 34 school year. Half of the cut had been restored last year.
Art Duensing and Charles Palmer won the dairy cattle judging contest at a Washington county Cow Testing association and Farm Bureau Service company picnic in Chautauqua Park. They earned a trip to the Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo on Oct 4 to compete. Two visiting speakers and musical quartets entertained about 175 attendees, with games and horseshoe pitching adding to the day.
Cincinnati agent Nelson Klein of the Justice Department was killed in a gun battle while attempting to capture auto thief suspect George W. Barrett. Fellow agent D C McGovern and Barrett were wounded. Barrett was shot in both legs and hospitalized in Hamilton, Ohio.
A $50,000 fire destroyed the cattle barn at the Iowa State College dairy farm in Ames early today. The blaze drove nearly 200 head of registered stock to safety as surrounding buildings sustained damage and investigators cited spontaneous combustion as the likely cause.
The Washington man Dr F C Witzigman is scheduled to deliver the main address at the county W C T U convention in Kalona on August 21 at 2 PM titled The Prohibition Battle Line. The day includes reports, devotionals, music, officers election, and demonstrations by Loyal Temperance Legion and Young People.
Milburn McKay director of the Washington and Fairfield Municipal bands signed with C G Conn to serve schools and students free and to be master dealer in six counties including Washington Jefferson Henry Keokuk Louisa and Wapello. He will direct the Washington Municipal band for 1936 starting November 1 and open a retail store at 119 East Washington Street.
Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey arrived home at 3 a m with Jake Hoover of Brighton, wanted on calf stealing charges. Hoover had been arrested in Aberdeen at Sheriff Putnam's request. Hoover and Lloyd Reighard of Brighton face arraignment for stealing a calf from the McClintie Brothers' pasture near Brighton.
Mrs Alma Fischer rode the new Burlington bus from Omaha to town on Thursday noting prompt service. She described a pleasant trip and commendations for the staff and accommodations involved in the service.
Arnold Brown, 41 years old of Ainsworth formerly of Wayland, is jailed awaiting a hearing on lewdness charges. County Attorney Geo F Morrison said ten women identified him as the indecent exhibitor over several months in and near Richard Arthur of Cotter was here on business.
Mrs. Fischer visits Mr. and Mrs. Paul Moore and remarks on the new bus service. She plans to stay a few days and notes this convenience, saying she has never enjoyed such transit before during prior stays.
Addis Ababa August 17 Ethiopia moves for quick disposition of men and arms for war with Italy. Every inhabitant without a master or chief must attach to a chief named by the ministry of war. Those not soldiers must register arms with the prefect judge. Unregistered arms face fine and confiscation. Revolver carrying requires a permit. Unemployed residents must register and report to the minister of war. Business proprietors must register tenants and report absentees.
Mrs. Charles B. Morgan aged 86 of Clay township died at 8:15 am at her daughter's home from old age infirmities. Born June 6 1849 and married Feb 17 1871 to Charles B. Morgan she was a member of the Friends church at Rubio. Survived by husband two daughters and three sons, plus two sisters and one brother. She and her husband were long time members of the Journal's Three Quarter Century club.
Hubert Turner fills the DeWit store clerking post substituting for ill Orlin Witting and plans to return to Coe College this fall.
The 27 graduates, twelve men and fifteen women from Washington Academy 1895, plan a fortieth anniversary reunion August 23 with ten states represented. A banquet at the local YMCA will feature Miss Cora Smiley tapping the bell to call the roll, with most members replying by letter or in person.
The commencement program was conducted on two consecutive evenings, Thursday June 6 and Friday June 7 1895. The text notes the sequence of events and the two-session format for the graduation exercises.
Pilot Joe Crosson landed in Fairbanks Alaska with the bodies of Will Rogers and Wiley Post aboard a transport plane en route to the United States. He planned a brief rest before continuing to Juneau and then Seattle to meet Mrs Post and return Post to Maysville.
Funeral services for John Dusenbery who died yesterday morning will be held Sunday at 2 30 p m at the L A Jones funeral home. Dr F C Witzigman will lead the Methodist church service and a Masonic service will be held at Elm Grove cemetery.
Secretary Leigh Soule of the Y M C A announced that the Hi club sponsored annual book exchange will open at the Y next Monday. Those wanting to dispose of used books or obtain second hand texts may use the exchange facilities.
Mrs J W Cox returns from Rochester where she underwent a major operation. She was away three weeks and is reported to be getting along nicely.
A large Washington contingent plans a Sunday visit to Camp Dodge to see Troop PF 113th Cavalry while Iowa National Guard units train. The afternoon features a Cavalry horse show with Lt. Harry Donaldson in a leading role and Capt. Jay Brown reporting good camp progress. Next week expect a horseback hike near the camp lasting several days.
