The Washington chautauqua enters its second week with three days of lectures music and entertainment. The program features operatic performances The Violin Maker of Cremona and a Sunday sermon by Rev Ermil B. Frye on religious morale. Dr A W Henke leads Bible hour and crowd attendance is strong.
Chariton Iowa Aug 17 George Young and son Robert visitors on Harry Hoopers farm were arrested by Sheriff J H Smith of Lucas county in connection with the June 26 1930 slayings of Sheriff Fred Sweet and Marshal Aaron Bailey of Washington. A fingerprint expert from Des Moines was en route to identify the suspects. William Hatley Washington night watchman who witnessed the slayings may be called to testify. The arrestees were the same pair seen here soon after the murders and questioned by a local lawyer about criminal procedure. Both men appeared nervous according to the sheriff. Bailey and Sweet were killed in the sheriff office by a man captured by Wapello county authorities.
County Attorney George F. Morrison investigates the Chariton report amid the ongoing search for the two officers' killer. He warns it could be another wild goose chase yet hopes the clue may yield valuable information.
Two men from Kirksville Missouri were fingerprinted in Chariton Iowa by J E Harold Gesell of the Iowa bureau of investigation. They remain in custody with no charges filed, suspected in the shooting of Washington county peace officers.
Walier Illinois August 17 A 80 year old man, 8S. R. Patton, plans to attend his own funeral on Sunday August 30. He arranged four ministers to preach and issued funeral announcements so flowers can be sent now. He orders mourners to place flowers on his lap and will host a picnic dinner for the mourners before the services.
In a church service the minister warned that modern secular civilization breeds indifference and lowers religious standards. He urged friends of the church to awaken to the current moral challenge. Dr. A. W. Henke and Rev. A. A. Vinz participated, with Methodist choir and soloists Mrs. J. M. Lattimore Miss Margaret Corbin and director Mrs L. A. Warren. Rev. Ermil B. Frye spoke to seventy five young people on the theme The Foolish Five or The Test of Character.
Washington residents receive a chance to earn free tickets to the Fox or State theaters by anonymously rating local stores. Ace O Towns fronts a double-page Journal ad listing 30 firms and blank spaces for comments. kids can collect parent help and submit sheets at the Journal office for August showings.
S C Clancy of Des Moines state manager for the Business Men's Assurance company of Kansas City Mo conducts a salesman school at the Colenso hotel this week with ten men attending. Clancy says trained salesmen are necessary and the era of part time agents is ending with public demanding better life insurance salesmen.
Richmond resident William Kern son of Mr and Mrs Joe Kern suffered a broken right arm and back injuries when a wagonload of corn ran over him Saturday evening He was transported to Kalona for medical care.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh rest in Petropavlovsk as they recover from the Kamchatka leg en route to Nemuro and Tokyo Officials anticipate a large welcome in Nemuro with Japanese schoolchildren and crowds while workers set barriers at Kasumigaura airport for Wednesday’s visit.

The Washington Boosters defeated Brighton 16 to 6 yesterday after Brighton substituted for the Oskaloosa Eagles whose game was cancelled. Ottumwa hosts the Boosters next week.

Mrs Walter Conner of Washington was elected one of three delegates to represent the first town district at the national American Legion and Auxiliary convention in Detroit. The national gathering opens Sept 21 with Mr and Mrs Walter Conner and Mr and Mrs Russell Frink planning to attend. Frink also serves as a Iowa Legion delegate chosen at Davenport.
The August meeting announced for Friday evening will consider details of the fall festival and preparations for its opening. Tickets for the dinner go on sale tomorrow and members may review plans to illuminate the athletic field next fall with business leaders' support.
Des Moines reports state officials say 69 district court judges who have assessed the state for extracity expenses since 1915 may have to refund all such sums if a legislative expense accounts measure is found unconstitutional. The constitution is cited as limiting pay increases for both judges and legislators during their elected terms.
A third degree earthquake shattered homes in west Texas and eastern New Mexico, tossing sleepers from beds and forcing hundreds to flee. It lasted 38 minutes, felt from Dallas to Tucumcari with considerable damage but no injuries reported. A separate Denver storm dumped three feet of hail and flooded areas after a sudden thunderous onset.
A car in the street near the Colenso Annex caught fire on Saturday evening. Fire was extinguished with chemical extinguishers and no fire department was needed after the alarm was raised.
Mrs. W E Kerr, longtime Washington county resident, died at 4 40 pm at her Carthage Missouri home at age 92. She was born in Fayette county Ohio on September 3 1849 and moved to Kansas area in 1846. Funeral plans set for Wednesday morning at her daughter Mrs W K Andersons home with burial beside husband in Elm Grove cemetery.
Clossen and Diemerly announce opening a cigar store and club room in the old Journal room on Wednesday evening the 19th. The front will house a cigar store selling cigars drinks and novelties. The club will be private for men after that date and open only to dues-paying members under by-laws. Visitors are invited for the opening.
A reader recalls England Arkansas aiding Henrietta Oklahoma with 138 truckloads of food after a drought. The message praises the act and notes England's prosperity this year while emphasizing mutual aid among communities.
Paris August 17 France will not give up its reparations claim on Germany minister of finance Pierre-Etienne Flandin declared. He said the United States may dispose of its debts but France will insist on scheduled payments. He added repayment capacity is a matter for Young plan experts and noted past French rehabilitation.
Lem 1D. Stinson of Wichita Kansas born in Richmond community and a former Washington resident visits Washington with wife sister and daughter. He recalls attending Washington Academy and the high school under Principal Lewis and superintendent and notes Eversons hall once Washingtons only theatre and Bryson house as the great hotel. He leaves tonight seeking old friends and fond Wichita ties.
A. W. Carver and Robert W Fairbanks announced in Washington the United States Army band will give a concert in Muscatine on September 4 under the Muscatine Rotary club. A band contest for southeastern Iowa organizations will accompany the event with the Washington band likely to compete. The army band, one of the great bands of the day, will perform at Soldiers Field in Chicago before heading to Muscatine and then Kansas City.
Wendall Booth traveled to Des Moines on Saturday night to spend a few days visiting George Benson, according to local gossip and visitor records.
Governor Ross Sterling proclaimed martial law and ordered the shutdown of more than 1,600 oil and gas wells in Upshur, Rusk, Gregg, and Smith counties. Brig. Gen. Jacob F. Wolters and 800 state troopers were dispatched to enforce the orders amid fears of waste and price instability.
The Chinese government proposed to buy surplus farm board wheat and sought credit terms, transmitted via the Nan King consul. The aim is to use the wheat to relieve suffering in the flooded Yangtze valley.
