In Benwood Wheeling WV Aug 17 a four hour riot erupted between striking machinists and non union workers at the National Tube Riverside plant. Shots fired 1444 with two wounded one man struck in knee and another in leg both taken away. Police dispersed the fighting groups.
A tropical cyclone battered Merida and Progreso with fierce winds tearing roofs from homes and trees from streets. Coastal damage worsened as boats were cast ashore and hundreds of bales of hennequey and cotton on Progreso docks were destroyed.
Frank B. Greer of East Boston Athletic Association Boat Club won the sculling championship on Lake Quinsigamond at the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen regatta. Greer led by eight lengths at the finish over PB. Wesley of the First Bohemian Boat Club. Titus of the Atalanta Boat Club dropped out a eighth of a mile from the line.
On a clear day off Oyster Bay the North Atlantic fleet anchored offshore as Rear Admiral Harker and Captain Hemphill met Navy Secretary Mandy and ex Secretary Chandler aboard the Kearsarge. President Roosevelt, arriving aboard the naval yacht Sylph, was greeted with full honors and hosted for divine service, with officers in fall dress and ceremonial salutes.
The president and Mrs Roosevelt visited the cruiser Kearsarge on a Sunday to inspect the ship and attend a Chaplain James sermon. Admiral Barker greeted them. a launch conveyed a party including Mrs Roosevelt and children, Captain Brownson and other officials.
