Kingston Jamaica Aug 15 heart rending scenes across eastern and northern Jamaica as hurricane left thousands homeless and starving. Fort Antonio sheltering survivors and damaged towns report near starvation with unripe bananas boiled for food. Hospitals crowded. deaths feared from starvation and disease. $15 000 000 in island losses expected.
Bloomington Aug 15 The Chicago and Alton railroad which owns the Quincy Carrollton and Western has begun tearing up tracks west of Carrollton due to unprofitability. Industries along the line were bought to shield owners from loss. Eldred and Carrollton residents secured a temporary injunction to stop further track removal and the case awaits circuit court in Carrollton. Roadmaster James Sweeney was arrested for defying the injunction but agreed to honor the court order.
Marion Platt of Cass County moved to a 65 acre Jackson township farm and began placer gold panning. Last Tuesday he found 5.80 dollars in gold near his barn, bringing his total gold yield to 14.00 dollars since moving onto the property.
In Denver the National Building Trades' Council convention backed William Randolph Hearst of New York for U S president by a 28 to 19 vote after a heated debate.

J Kidd of Chicago, vice president of the AFL, spoke at Chautauqua on labor unions and the mob spirit. He defended unions against violence charges, praising conciliation and arbitration and noting many disputes settled without force. He cited Wood Workers’ Union of Chicago and recent strikes showing little or no violence. Logansport Indiana August 15 reports that following the Tennessee pearl-hunters success in the Wabash river near Georgetown, many mussel boats have been launched and several fleets now anchor at various river locations.
A large group of pearl hunters camp along the river amid talk of a pearl factory to process the numerous shells taken. Pearls valued at up to 15 pounds have been found, and it is claimed that the men in the business are earning about 10 pounds daily.
