Flood Rages Through Fairbanks Alaska Displacing Thousands
Flood waters from the Chena River inundated Fairbanks and Nenana in Alaska’s worst disaster since 1964. Three people died, roads and rail links were severed, water supplies condemned, and most homes damaged. The University and city blocks housed evacuees as guards patrolled debris-filled streets. President Johnson was asked to declare a disaster area for both Fairbanks and Nenana. The downtown remained six to seven feet deep in places as rains ceased.

Mother's futile fight to save two children from car plunge
A mother, Jane Murray, 29, of Weston Massachusetts, tried to stop a car rolling 40 feet down a slope into Lake Sunapee while her children Katherine six and James seven were inside. Divers recovered James 15 minutes after entry and Katherine 10 minutes later. A conservation officer noted two six inch birch trees near the shoreline would have halted the car if struck.

Body of missing Davenport boy found in river
The body of a young child, likely 23 months old, was found in the Mississippi River near Lock and Dam No 15. Investigators tentatively identified the victim as Steven Hernandez, who disappeared after being left with a man described as a cowboy dressed suspect. His brother David, 3, accompanied him earlier.
