Rudolph C. Mayer, a German born wood engraver who worked on the new United States Supreme Court building, died at age 72 from heart disease. The Davenport column notes Mayer's contributions to art and his origins in Germany.
Robert Wamsher Jr. suffered fatal injuries when hurled from the running board during a collision between a car carrying his family and another driven by Russell H. Mott. Wamsher Jr. had a fractured skull. His father, mother, and seven siblings were in the vehicle.
Beverly Ann Winters eight year old escaped a second story tumble at her home when the window screen failed and landed on a coil of garden hose, suffering only bruises.
Eugene Cain, son of Mr and Mrs Wart Cain, Waterloo, bit his tongue and needed eight stitches after a tire he was rolling down the street struck his mouth when it rebounded against a passing car.
Henry G Walker, 57, partner in Dutcher Walker Ries, shot himself in his Iowa City garage. A revolver bullet entered his chest causing instant death. No motive given. He left a wife and three children.
Hawarden civic and fraternal orders pledge funds to furnish hospital rooms as the new municipal hospital nears completion. Officials say a federal grant and local bond funds will cover the needs and the facility should be ready for use on October 1.

Ten veteran Davenport police officers with over 22 years on the force say they will resist involuntary retirement. They argue the police commission lacks authority to compel retirement.
Ames Iowa meteorologist Charlies D Reed told Kiwanis that Iowa does not have droughts and blamed extreme heat. He noted the state endured 10 to 20 more days above 100 degrees than 1984 with many stations 4 to 6 degrees hotter than ever before. He credited drought resistant corn seed for its resilience.
In Des Moines District Judge Russell Jordan granted formal approval of reinsurance rates for Union Mutual Life Co. of Iowa by Occidental Life Insurance Co. of Los Angeles. Union Mutual has been in receivership since May 7 and its license revoked after state examiners charged mismanagement. Last January, policyholders filed and sought action.
Des Moines reports that former Senator Smith W Brookhart of Washington Iowa plans to back President Roosevelt. Brookhart has delayed reply to the Farmer Labor nomination and recently conferred with Governor Herring while avoiding attacks on Roosevelt during the Dickinson race.
The Washington County Republican central committee met at Congress Hotel for a 6 pm dinner. Guests included Martha McClure Pleasant Wal ker D Hanna William Rathke John Calhoun and others. plans were laid to perfect the county organization and prepare for the campaign. Forty three attended as chairman L. M. Eicher led the gathering and praised the interest shown.

H L Miller of St Louis, new owner, plans to reorganize the 8S N Shoe Store on the east side of the square. The store will close August 22 for interior decorating and new fixtures before reopening under new management. Miller will continue his duties with Brown Shoe Company. A manager will handle day to day operations.
The emergency drouth relief committee will hold its first meeting Monday evening to consider applications for drouth relief. Applications must go through the emergency relief office to Miss Jane Lady, county welfare worker. The committee with Carl Klein as chairman and Miss Ludy were in Ottumwa yesterday to receive instructions on how to proceed.

Fingerprints confirmed the man crushed under a circus wagon at Davenport on Tuesday as Leo Savageau, 39, who escaped from a Loudon Ohio reformatory on July 22, 1933, with hundreds of witnesses present.
The Iowa butter theft ring struck again in Winnebago county as creameries reported to the state bureau of investigations. Since April 1 a total of 18 tons of butter have been stolen from about a dozen towns.

Warner will feature soloists John Richard Schwenke clarinet who earned a superior rating at the 1956 state festival and national contest in Cleveland, Martha Hamilton xylophone a 1982 state first and national winner now at Iowa University, and Kathleen Butler soprano senior in high school. The concert begins at 3:30 p m Sunday.

Mrs Dora Stella Smith aged 70 died last night at the county home where she had resided thirty years. Born near New London Henry county August 26 1865 she was daughter of Francis Daily. Surviving children include Mrs Floyd Singleton Virgil Smith Arnold Smith Mrs Elma Burroughs Mrs Don Moore Wade Smith and Rev Floyd Singleton. Funeral at 1 30 tomorrow at L A Jones funeral home with Rubio burial.
AMES Iowa Aug. 14 The 27 Iowa State college students at the Knoxville CCC camp gain field experience and college credit while studying soil conservation. They may take exams for federal student aid paying 1440 dollars a year. those who finish the 10 week program Sept. 12 become eligible for a six month trial. Prof J B Peterson directs the agronomy program as students inspect watershed areas with soils specialists and engineers to learn soil conservation issues.
Mrs Lester Long will leave tonight for a two week vacation in Kansas. She plans to visit her father Walter Wilkin and brothers at Vermilion with her sisters Mrs R W Beebee and Ruth Wilkin at Leavenworth. She will spend a few days with friends in Kansas City.
The department of agriculture announced a 30 day duck hunting season for this fall. The season opens October 10 and operates under strict regulations with presidential approval from Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In Kirkland Lake Ontario three men are trapped half a mile underground after a rock slide at the Lake Shore gold mine. Roy Warwick and Jay Morgen are named among the trapped workers as rescuers race to reach them. Condition of the trapped men was unknown amid the cave in and ongoing rescue efforts.
