A Des Moines column notes state owned liquor stores use Iowa State fair advertising as packaging wrap. Many outlets also wrap sacks with similar paper featuring images of harness racing, bucking steers, blue ribbon pigs, the dome, and corn ears with the motto education inspiration and recreation.
Chief C Paine hunts the so called laziest burglar who has entered two local homes to sleep on beds and pillows. The intruder faces up to 20 years under Iowa law though only 21 pennies are reported missing from the two houses.
A spirited contest for the presidency of the Iowa department of the American Legion auxiliary was assured with Mrs. Percy Lainson of Council Bluffs and Mrs. Carl Sampson of Creston nominated. Election today will conclude the four day convention's business.
Indianola Miss Fdna M. Stuntz dean of women at Simpson College for 13 years resigned. She had also taught secretarial science for three years. No successor announcement was made.
Milford public schools board again rules against transporting Catholic children to and from home during the school year. The fight, led by Rev. E C Meyers pastor of Saint Joseph Church and founder of Saint Josephs parochial school, had long sought public transportation for parochial school children.
A 10 acre peat bed near Highway 69 fifteen miles south of Belmond has burned for five weeks. Gas odors irritate surrounding farmers as the bed continues until exhausted. Holes three to five feet deep will be burned and must be filled before land can be productive again. Best use found for the land is potato farming.
Mrs Delina Port of Wilton a former South Bethel choir member sang several solos at the ninety ninth anniversary celebration of the church south of Tipton. Her appearance highlighted the event with nostalgic vocal pieces.
Five gunmen robbed a Marshalltown Elks picnic poker game injuring Paul Black as he attempted an escape. W A Kinsey, a local electrician, was struck in the jaw with a revolver during the assault.
Spencer Clayton Conte, Spencer high school 1925 graduate, sails August 20 from New York to Naples then Bari to enter the University of Bari, alma mater of his late father Sam Conte. He will study music roots with his uncle Domenico Conte in Modugno near Bari and has not chosen a major yet.
Former State Senator Leslie Francis of Des Moines will deliver the principal address at the annual Old Settlers Picnic in Milford. Francis, formerly from Dickinson County, is slated to speak on community history and local heritage.
Thirty eight Rio Tinto miners including American J O Ambler of Montana are being held by Spanish communists in the Huelva mines. The firm has asked the British foreign office and Spanish embassy for intervention amid fears for staff safety as anti government forces approach the mine.
The Thomas E. Wilson gold medal for outstanding county 4-H livestock club member is offered in Iowa. County winners must be reported by November 2. The state winner earns a $50 watch and a chance for one of four all expense trips to the National Club Congress in Chicago with cash scholarships up to 300 dollars.
Keota notices report former public school superintendent J. H. Peet will preach at the Methodist Church Sunday morning. The Keota Fall Festival beauty pageant opened with Helen Anderson winning first prize and Arlene Lyle as runner-up among Seventy Six township contestants.
Mr. and Mrs J G Arnold of Schinook Montana visit R F McFarlane home where Mrs Arnold and Mrs McFarlane are sisters. An old settlers picnic will be held at Gull Point State Park on Aug 21 with FE Helfridge Dickinson County Old Settlers association president in charge. The program includes reminiscent talks by surviving pioneers of the county and by H FE Narey Spirit Lake and Lester Gillette of Milford.
Mr and Mrs Paul Widmer bought the 107 acre William Krabill farm three miles northeast of Noble for 3000 dollars. Visitations include Thurlowe Meyer and family from Seward Neb and Joe T Wenger home guests. Robert Wittmer, son of Postmaster Edd Wittmer, passed the state bar exam and becomes a lawyer with Blue Ridge Finance in Indianapolis. Daryl Wittmer is visiting his brother.
Iowa farm bureau women from 19 counties will showcase 25 demonstrations of home improvement and farm betterment projects in 1986. The event features 82,851 towa farm women across Franklin O'Brien Woodbury Cherokee Sioux Scott Madison Dallas Adair Guthrie Muscatine Clayton Clay Marshall Webster and Shelby counties.
Seven members of the Veterinary Medicine Division at Iowa State College attended the national convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association in Columbus Ohio. They were Drs Charles Murray acting dean H L Foust C H Covault A G Karison EF F Waller and W R Anderson.
Dr Charles R. Brown Dean Emeritus of Yale Divinity School will speak at the University of Iowa as the first visiting vespers speaker for the 1926 37 series He is a former Iowa graduate returning for vespers and baccalaureate appearances He will appear September 27 in Iowa City.
The University of Washington eight boat won the Olympic championship for the United States. Germany had previously secured five straight finals victories before Washington’s triumph.
Mrs Carrie Mourer and family of Keota along with Mrs Mary E Doran and her daughter of Washington spent Monday afternoon at the Floyd Kelley home in Idwa City.
London reports that Gen. Francisco Franco arranged formal steps to secure Italian aid for the Spanish Civil War before fighting began. He visited Rome and conferred with an Italian official, promising major concessions if the rebels prevail, including possible transfer of Standard Oil concessions.
Luther O'Loughlin died Tuesday in Davenport and his funeral was held at 1:30 p m in Kalona Christian church. He had lived in the Masonic home for three years and formerly ran the Downtown cafe in Kalona. Burial took place in Washington. He was well known for his genial business manner and had many local friends.
Federal crop expert Charles D. Reed reports that about one third of the corn crop in ten north central counties has been saved due to rains forecast across Des Moines area.

Clarence Iowa reports Mrs August Ruther dying from injuries after a car crash. She was about 60 and pinned under the overturned vehicle, death marking Iowa auto accident toll at 267 this year. Toledo Iowa notes Homer Kepler charged with manslaughter in the death of Milo Konicek 26 and Mildred Kosnar 17 from last August 4.

Des Moines Aug 14 A four day meeting of the state federation of labor reached its close with adopted resolutions. L H Hill WPA director labeled labor enemies while denouncing WPA wage nonpayment as a stormy issue. The convention then moved to executive session to seek a salary raise for federal secretary Ralph J McAnally from 1000 to 2500 dollars.
Des Moines reports 1,354 new WPA jobs added across 43 counties today with 600 more set to start in the Sioux City region tomorrow. Officials hope to have about 5,000 workers ready by Monday, per Clyde L. Hering.
Between 3000 and 4000 people attended Kalona’s homecoming with ideal weather. The parade featured many floats led by the Kalona high school band with top prizes going to Snair hardware and Pleasant Hill school. Highlights included pony show wins, Amateurs contest, band concert, magic act, ventriloquism, 4‑H drill, Hawaiian troupe, and a 10–8 softball win by Kalona firemen followed by a 7 pm Roy Driscoll concert and dance.
In Owensboro Kentucky on August 14 a crowd of about 20 000 gathered to witness the public hanging of Rainey Bethea a 22 year old black man condemned for murder. The execution was attended by a female county official as substitute for the sheriff and the crowd jeered and taunted throughout the event.
