Regents warn against expecting more state university funding

At an Ames meeting the State Board of Regents faced a strong warning from Rep. Richard Radi that higher education funding from the legislature is unlikely to rise. He urged cost cuts, stricter admissions, and a reassessment of spending, while others urged better communication between lawmakers and the regents. Critics also complained UNI may be shortchanged as funding decisions favored Iowa City and Ames campuses. Local youths push plan for Washington youth center

Apollo 15 crew face fatigue and green rock mystery

Space Center Houston reports Apollo 15 astronauts suffered heart irregularities from fatigue during the 12 day mission. Geologists found unmistakably green rock chips and soil among samples, though origin unclear. Dr Berry hopes a 14 day lunar flight would shed light on man’s capacity to work in space and guide future mission scheduling.

County youths recognized Five get life-saving awards

Washington County youths are among 30 to receive life saving awards at State Day ceremonies in Des Moines. Recipients include Steven Weeks and Richard Porter of Washington, Raymond Garton of Washington, Karen Hazelton of Wellman, and Jeffrey Bowen of Keota for rescuing people during incidents at Lake Darling and elsewhere in Iowa from 1970 to 1971.
