SELMER Tenn UPI Sheriff Buford Pusser and his wife Pauline were shot during a roadside ambush as they responded to a disturbance call. Pauline died from a head wound while Pusser was wounded in the jaw. Police questioned suspects but made no arrests by Monday.
President Johnson sent top aides to Capitol Hill to push for a 10 per cent income tax surcharge. Treasury Secretary Fowler and Schultze faced a skeptical House Ways and Means Committee led by Rep. Mills who warned it was the toughest tax bill Johnson has faced. Fowler urged Congress to act by Oct. 1, arguing that delays jeopardize deficits and IRS timing for 1967 tax tables.
UPI reports American bombers struck vital North Vietnamese railroad targets within 10 miles of the Chinese frontier for a second day. The escalation, approved by President Johnson, aimed to curb Red China war materiel flow. Lang Son bridge was destroyed on Sunday and a nearby span damaged today as crews reported MIGs in the area and no American losses.
Albert Ware, 25, of Davenport, is accused of armed robbery in three Clark service stations within 55 minutes and car theft. Police pursued the stolen car after a $100 robbery. a crash in an alley led to his arrest. Ware remains at Mercy Hospital under guard with bonds totaling 80000 and four charges.
Waterloo leaders split from Mayor Turner on the so called overselling of federal programs that touched off last month’s disturbances in the city. NAACP head Dr. Warren Nash and Rev. R J Parker say the problems were broader than on the job training while agreeing the programs were oversold. Parker cites police image as a factor and Charles McMillan notes a deeper 100 year problem.
Burlington Iowa police questioned the owner of an apartment building where lumber stolen from Moline Illinois was found. A man fleeing the theft may have drowned when his truck plunged into the Mississippi River at Moline. Officers, armed with a search warrant, found the lumber stacked at the rear and recovered tools from the Mo line theft.
Four persons were killed in separate Iowa traffic crashes during the weekend. Victims include Martha Mae Vanersvelde a 19 year old from rural Brooklyn and Earl W. Curtis a 25 year old from Plattsmouth Nebraska. The Iowa highway toll for 1967 reached 453 with one additional death last month.
Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman warned the United States faces land scarcity as acres per person drop from 25 in 1900 to 9.7 and projected 6.4 by the century’s start. He called for a long term land-use policy and noted current programs provide key components, speaking at the Soil Conservation Society of America meeting.

Iowa City researchers from the State Hygienic Laboratory trap mosquitoes resembling lanterns across northeast northwest and southeast Iowa to map encephalitis transmission. Dr. William Hausler notes mosquitos likely spread the virus while trapping seeks to identify species and viruses, with rabbit antibody studies and virus isolation underway.
In Glacier National Park two grizzly bears attacked and killed two 19 year old girls while mauling a teenage boy. Park officials ordered evacuations and sent armed rangers to pursue the suspected bears as witnesses were questioned.
