Kenneth Schmitt aged 15 months son of Mr and Mrs James Schmitt drowned Saturday afternoon in a concrete water tank on the family farm home 11 miles east of New Hampton Winneshiek county. His body was found floating by his father. Services will be at Lawler today.
Fire destroyed a barn and machine shed on the Henry Paulsen farm northwest of Anita. Seventeen hogs were killed, and 150 bales of straw plus a corn planter and a binder were lost while Mr. and Mrs. Paulsen were away. Their two children saw smoke before the barn exploded into flames.
Sixteen social fraternities at the State University of Iowa may return to operation this fall after changes overseen by the committee on student affairs. Unaffiliated men and chapter members may live in houses again, subject to an adequate operation plan and mature supervision.
Amos Kaufmann aged 42 of Webster City drowned Sunday afternoon after falling from a motorboat on Morse Lake twelve miles northeast of Clarion. He was alone in the boat. The Belmond fire department was called but could not recover the body due to high winds. He is survived by his wife and two children.
In Iowa officials from Alaska recruit labor for war construction in the Aleutians and Alaska mainland. George A. Chandler and Albert A. Anderson urge applicants at nearest United States employment office for jobs including carpenters mechanics patrolmen heavy equipment operators clerical staff draftsmen and surveyors.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Marshal Tito met in Italy Saturday and Sunday to discuss political and military questions in a spirit of frankness. Dr Ivan Subasitch participated as the Yugoslav premier, and the three leaders proposed continuing talks to aid Yugoslavia.
Weather remains warm in Washington County with highs near 93 to 94 degrees. After a cooler Saturday morning, temperatures rose in the afternoon and nights cooled to the low sixties, aiding the county’s corn crop.
John R. Van Osdel of the Burlington navy recruiting office announces a navy recruiter will be in Washington on Thursday August 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to enlist 17 year old boys. those ready to enlist can start applications then.

The War Production Board expects military requirements for fountain pens to exceed 2,000,000 a quarter in 1944. It notes Coast Guard losses in World War I were higher, proportionately, than any other branch of the armed services.

The Journal announces its annual Three-Quarter Century club meeting will be on Saturday August 26 at the Washington Country Club. Dinner at noon features a short program and a talk by Dr F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church. Attendance runs about 125 to 150 with invitations this week to members and eligible new entrants.
A child health conference will be held Wednesday August 16 from 1 00 to 3 30 PM at Brighton High School. Mrs H H Hogans will take appointments. Infants, pre school and selected school cases are invited to attend. Concrete pouring for an 85 foot high soybean storage building at the Honeymead processing plant near town was completed Saturday evening after six days of continuous work. The structure, able to hold hundreds of thousands of soybeans, marks a major local construction feat using shallow slip-forms and extensive reinforcing steel.
United States British and Canadian forces flood the Falaise area. Aerial and artillery bombardment pummels German troops as three Allied armies converge toward a final envelopment with a shrinking open corridor of retreat likely under 12 miles. Canadian 1st Army joins effort five miles north of Falaise. Thousands of Allied planes attack retreating German columns and supply lines.
Allied military government officials in Florence began organizing delivery of food water and medical supplies as sniping and street fighting with partisans and fascists waned. New Zealand and British forces held Empoli while Frontone fell earlier. efforts focused on restoring normal life as debris and rubble littered streets.
Workmen on the contract may be reassigned as the concrete is held in place. A 60 foot high structure will be built by the continuous pouring method. Much remains to finish the newly erected elevator and storage building.
